94 Cummins, 6 speed 2500 with 3.07 gears??

Im looking at a couple different trucks. i have found a 94 cummins with a 6 speed tranny. truck has no rot. good shape. 220k on it, reg cab 8ft bed. I haven't seen it in person but it looks like a good truck. My main question about the truck is since it is a 6 speed and has that low low 1st gear is if i could or should put in a different front and rear axle that has 3.07 gearing. My plan will be to make the 1st granny gear be just like a regular 1st gear and have that 6th gear be a highway gear so i keep engine rpm's down. the axles would cost 1200 for both and come out of a first gen. the front is a dana 61 and the rear is a dana 71. whats everyone think? :c:

have you done the math on it yet? Math = proof... every time.

Gear Ratio Calculator
Find your transmission, or plug in your own values...

(after you select your transmission, it wont actually plug in the values for you to see, until you hit calculate)

Edit... just rechecked mine... never recalculated with the 20" wheels i'm running now. With my 2.73 gearing, I'm at 141mph at 3000 rpms. Saweeet. 1800rpm at my usual 85mph highway cruise speed. I need radar detector.

What? low low? what 6spd is in the truck? NV5600? and it has a D60 and D70 for axles. If thats the case the truck was converted from an auto and prob has 355 gears.

Im not sure what it has for axles. and my friend has a 2001 cummins 6 speed 1 ton and 1st gear is like a granny gear. idk if this truck has been converted from auto. maybe converted from 5 speed to 6 speed. just a tarnny swap but im not sure what tranny. im guessing 5600 it is a 6 speed

5th is 1:1 so 6th is an od gear. Its not good to lug the truck and tranny. If you into any hauling at all the diff gear set will def not help you. Look into a gearvendor OD unit if your dead set on dropping engine rpm

even on a 5 speed the first gear is pretty slow. 10 mph. in the 6 speed i am just looking to get my first gear instead of being a granny slow gear to just make it a regular first and have that 6th gear faster but not crazy fast where i have no power like the 2.73. thats to much. also can i even put first gen axles on a 2nd gen truck?

Yea wondering the same here. 1st gens have u bolts around the axle how will the strut be held on to the axle and how will the fourwheel drive set up work?

Also remember from first gen to second they switched the drop on the t case from passenger side (first gen) to drivers side(second gen). Like stated above the first gen was a leaf style setup up front vs second gens control arms with coils.

only thing keeping it from happening is the pumpkin being on the wrong side then????? :s:

what about just changing the internals of the second gen trucks axles. easier isn't it? someone explain what we could do. change the splines/ring gear, pinion gears? front and back? maybe like 3.10 gear ratio? i believe i have 3.53. at 65 im doin about 1900 or so. on 285's id like 65 at like 1500-1800 or so. how could the be possible

Re-gearing an axle can be a hassle and is expensive no matter which way you go about it.

I used to do gear on jeeps all the time for a shop around here... its no fun unless its a Ford 9", Toyota 8", or GM 14 bolt. Those are the only axles that are not a pain in the ass.
