Need some help white smoking
 
I installed a billet tappet cover roughly two weeks ago after reinstalling everything went to start but truck wouldn't start, retimed it and it started but smokes white at idle and pops if given any throttle and won't go over 1k have tried retiming a few times and have even taken pump off again to check everything but is still doing the same. Anyone have any thoughts or help?

I timed it using the blue point timing kit with the dial indicator, i was goin to pin time it but as luck would have it i dropped the pump gear nut in the timing cover

so now your taking the tin cover off to get the nut back? one thing that i have had problems with before is the timing jumping when i break the gear back loose after setting the plunger lift to what i want. any more i tighten the nut just enough to get the shaft to turn like 10ftlb maybe. also why dont ya walk us thru the steps just to make sure.

Yup and i usually break the nut loose before i go to set the plunger lift. But i take the intake horn and injector lines off
Take the dv holder and dv outta number 1 install the dial indicator take the oil fill off and break the pump gear nut loose, then have someone roll the engine over off the dampner til the needle bottoms out zero the dial indicator then turn the engine till the dial indicator is on the desired mm, pop the gear roll engine to tdc, reinstall washer and nut torque to 145 with someone holding the engine by the dampner to keep from spinning

7-7.1mm 19 degrees on my 175 pump i had set it there awhile back and it ran real good

did you varify that the pin timing also shows the correct amount of plunger lift for that pump?

also just want to make sure i got this right. all you done was pulled the pump off so that you could change the tappet cover then you put it all back together correct? didnt do anything else?

Didnt verify just tried to set it back to stockish timing to see if would run. And yes all i did was remove the pump to replace the tappet cover then reinstalled pump

i would think that it has to be the timing then but it sounds like your doing everything right. your not changing directions at any point while your timing it are you? you turn it clockwise till the needle bottoms out then keep turning it until you get to 7mm of lift without ever going backwards?

If i turn it backwards any we go past where we want it then turn it clockwise

again it sounds like you got your bases covered on the timing. have you checked the fuel system?

Besides my fuel pressure gauge at my airdog i haven't checked or been able to check anything in the fuel system besides popin injectors when the truck was runin

i see you have the tork tek OFV but just for giggles try clamping off the return line and see if it will start/run/rev then

no clue and sometimes things dont need reasons, just trying to cover the basics. 3 things they need to run, air and fuel at the right time. air is a given and were now assuming that the timing is correct altho i would probably varify the plunger lift with it pin timed. so now were looking at the fuel side of the triangle and you say you have good lift pump pressure so just going thru the system.

heres a weird one for ya. we put a clutch in an 08 6.7. finished it up drove it out of the shop and for a short test drive. all was good so we parked it and called the customer. customer arrives to pick it up and it will start but just rev up and die every time and the electronic throttle light came on. turned out the throttle valve had gone bad and was staying shut all the time. this happened when the truck was parked apparantly so like i was saying sometimes things dont need a reason.

Now that is bout weird hopefully my problem is something little like that. When i kink off the return line should i do it before or after the injector return

Had a friend take a look at the truck tonight re pin timed it it dont slip. Tried starting it still didn't start shot it with brake clean started and ran but still runs super rough white smokes super heavy hes thinkin the new tappet cover is rubbing on the push rods and hangin the valves. Any thoughts?
