modifying or changing intercooler
 

I am putting a 5.9 cummins from 1995 Dodge 3500 into a M715 (military truck). The motor is a tight fit but I should be able to get it to work. The real problem is fitting in the intercooler.

Can the intercoolers be "cut down" by a radiator shop or do I have to order a custom intercooler (and if I do, who would you recommend)?

I don't believe you:d be able to cut it down, your best bet would be to make some measurements of the room you have and find an intercooler off of something else to fit.

You could have a custom air-to-air made, or check out some of the tuner car sites for the oddly configured off the shelf intercoolers. You could also run an air-to-liquid intercooler which would give you flexibility as far as mounting the air-to-liquid unit and then either run jacket coolant through it or set up a small radiator and stand-alone system for it. Furthermore, you could look into sourcing a factory Cummins jacket coolant aftercooled manifold and crossover, found in some medium duty applications and generator sets. You'll have to have the injections lines to go with it though as it takes up the entire area of the intake plate. That would be a bolt on solution though, if you could source it.
