Stacks...

well i just ordered stacks. and i hear if it rains or snows you have to cover them with a bucket or somethin. Im gettin the aussie cut and was wonderin if i have to cover them if its just lightly raining or what.

rkadcock 10-27-2009 06:52 PM

I wouldn't think you would have to cover the aussies like you would a miter or straight cut. I'm sure theirs still a chance of rain getting in but it wouldn't be as bad as the mitre or straight cuts. I personally think you'll be fine without rain caps with the aussies.

HeavyChevyDMAX 10-27-2009 07:11 PM

alright cool thanks man

Oilfield_Mafia 10-28-2009 05:35 PM

Why would you HAVE to cover the stacks? Ive got a 6" single Mitre cut and I never cover it. Ever.. rain sleet snow or hail. why would you HAVE to cover it?

2500HeavyDuty 10-28-2009 05:37 PM

soot boogers

HeavyChevyDMAX 10-28-2009 05:41 PM

i heard from someone that you should cover them if its rainin but i guess theyre wrong idk. just askin for you guys opinion. guess i wont have to cover them then haha

GTRW3T 10-28-2009 08:28 PM

i have aussie's on my truck and i never cover them. unless the truck is sitting for long periods of time.

team-mad 10-28-2009 09:53 PM

The main reason they cover them in bad weather is because if it rains water goes into stack, next day you start the truck up and it will blow some diesel soot out, aint gonna hurt nothin

Where did you get your stacks from? looking to buy a set for my pick up i just cant believe how damn proud they are of them things, christ i ddint think they would be nearly that much. mind me askin what ya paid for them? what siz are they?

dieseldocter16 10-28-2009 11:06 PM

I had straight cuts on mine w/ rain caps and after bout 3 months the dinging of the caps started drivin me nuts. :ouch: So now i'm runnin mitres and it's rained all week :argh: and so far i've havent had a problem.

stkdram55 10-29-2009 12:15 AM

the biggest thing you would have to worry about with rain is if it did rain enough in theory it could get all the way up to the turbo and hydro lock the engine...but were talkin and ungodly amount of rain...the biggest thing that will happen is the flex pipe will start to rust out after a few years of rain getting down in there...like mine:ouch:

HeavyChevyDMAX 10-29-2009 06:55 PM

now i have 4in straight pipe right now. can i only go from 4" to a 5" aussie or can i get 6" tips with 4" pipes?

rkadcock 10-29-2009 11:19 PM

I think you can add reduces onto the bottom of the stacks to make it work. I know that the bigger grand rock stacks go down to 5" but like I said a reducer should work, but don't quote me on that

If it rained enough to fill your exhaust system back to the turbo, I think the truck would be under water and the least of your worries :c:

HeavyChevyDMAX 11-02-2009 10:08 PM

would a 6" stack have a different sound coming from 4" downpipe rather than a 5" stack?

1st_gen_puller 11-02-2009 10:18 PM

buddy of mine found 8'' turns outs and the actual hole that u see is like 11 and 3/4 and the reduced to 4'' but they were very very pricey.. took a BIG bill to get them..
one with 3 0's

You have way more tolerance than I do. I had a rain cap on my straight cut for about a week. Now it's sitting on a shelf. Sumbitch, those things are annoying! Now if its raing hard, I go out and put a lid from a can of Gator-aid mix on it.:D

calabria69 11-10-2009 05:24 PM

drill a small hole in the bottom of ur 90 so the water has some where to go....mine has been in snow and rain storms without being covered, and its a mittered cut....so no worries.......

+1

drill a small hole at the lowest point. the exhaust will rust faster from the inside out.. otherwise when you start it after a heavy rain it will throw soot filled nasty water 10' up in the air which will rain back down on your truck or whatevers nearby and make it nasty.

coal blooded 10-19-2012 02:48 PM

Yeah man I ran eights on my lb7 with 5 inch up to the front pipe and they are miter cut I've never covered them. you will notice a little soot shot on the bed rails. I've currently been running the same exact exhaust on my lbz and same thing no problems just a little black splatter on the rails.they're on there all year round

1959JD630 04-14-2013 05:10 PM

Do you hear the exhaust at all any better in the cab than you do when its behind the tire? main reason i want to do a stack is just to hear her purr
:c:
