3rd Gen Tech: Cummins Steering wheel logo

I came up with a way to replace the Dodge ram head on my steering wheel, and replace it with the Cummins “C”. I actually thought of it while doing the front Grille Cummins “C”, but it’s taken me a little while to get around to it.

This is what I came up with.

The first thing that needs to be done, is removing the current Ram head on the steering wheel.
I used a small screwdriver for this and pried vigorously until it came off. There are 3 posts that are on the emblem and go through the Steering wheel cover, so removal was difficult. Eventually, I won.

Steering wheel without the emblem

At first, I had not decided which emblem to go with. These were the 2 finalists. These are actually lapel pins, or hat pins, and the small size is perfect for this mod.
In the pic below, part number CI0026 is on the left and CI0025 is on the right. The quarter is for size reference. These can be purchased from Cummins PowerStore - Apparel, accessories, T-shirts, mugs, travel gear, bags, puzzles, gifts, pet accessories, totes, pencils, journals, pens, and jackets
or as in my case, from my local Rocky Mountain Cummins facility. I decided to go with the Black Cummins “C”.

I had to come up with a plastic background for the emblem. I used a piece of plastic wire spool, because it was handy. Any hard plastic would work, and since I intended to paint it, I wasn’t too picky about the source.

http://i39.tinypic.com/mih2xh.jpg

I placed the old emblem on the scrap plastic piece upside down to trace it out to obtain the shape for my new emblem’s background.

http://i43.tinypic.com/ofvgb4.jpg

I traced it out with a Sharpie

http://i43.tinypic.com/2w5luzq.jpg

Using a cut off wheel in a side grinder, I roughly cut out the shape of the background piece.

http://i40.tinypic.com/ztslsk.jpg

I used a Bench grinder to true up the shape, leaving a little of the “Red” from the marker for final shaping.

http://i42.tinypic.com/160ztrm.jpg

Final shaping was done with sandpaper, I also beveled the edges a little with the sand paper.

http://i43.tinypic.com/saw9bb.jpg

I used a Scotch Brite pad for smoothing and blending, and also to rough up the plastic for painting.

I then went to the steering wheel to test fit the piece. Looks good enough.

http://i44.tinypic.com/4rs4dd.jpg

I then smoothed the steering wheel area where the emblem will go with sandpaper, basically, removing some of the high spots, and creating a good bonding surface for the RTV I intend to use to attach it.

http://i41.tinypic.com/25z1i4h.jpg
http://i44.tinypic.com/2cojszq.jpg

I then painted the background piece a metallic Silver, and drilled a hole for the pin on the emblem. You can get an idea of where to drill the hole by placing the emblem approximately where you want it, and then pushing the pin into the background piece, making a mark on it. If you choose to use the “Cummins Power” emblem, it will just sit a little higher on the background piece so the “power” script clears.

http://i40.tinypic.com/684lev.jpg

I applied a little RTV to the back of the emblem and carefully attached it to the background piece. The metal flake on the background piece looks pretty large in this pic, I think it was my camera setting.

http://i41.tinypic.com/ojmdte.jpg

After waiting for the RTV to set, I bent the pin over to help hold the emblem to the background. Next, the completed emblem gets RTV’ed to the Steering wheel. I used masking tape to hold it in place (Keep it from sliding or moving while the RTV dried)
I didn’t take a pic of this step, I figured you could all just “Visualize” it.

Here’s a pic of the Finished emblem.

This was supposed to be the final Cummins Edition modification to my truck… Until I saw the super cool Valve covers made by ChromeStackMafia, who is a vendor here on the Forum… now I have to have one of those! Here’s a link:

Thanks for checking it out, and as always questions and comments are welcome!

Thanks for the compliment, (I think?) ya onery ol bastid!

I had the idea the background should be the same color as your truck, unless it's black, then the "C" wont show up so well. In that case, you might have to pick a secondary color combo to try to make it look like it came that way... ya follow me here?

Even if you just duplicate the color of the steering wheel for the background piece, (Once again, as long as it isn't black.)

What color is your truck, Chad?:w2:

dang it Bill you gotta stop doing cool stuff and making it all yourself and what not, what would i ever have to be jealous of if you stopped making cool stuff?

jstange2 01-31-2009 06:44 PM

That looks great!!

I hate to even mention this, but do you think that it would cause problems if the airbags would happen to deploy? I wouldn't think so, just thought I'd throw it out there.

cbrahs 01-31-2009 09:52 PM

that way if you ever get into a wreck you have the "C" imprinted onto your forhead! LOL..

Great job Bill!

Captain Call 02-01-2009 12:38 AM

yeah but it'd still be cool Call and think if you put the cummins power one one then you could have that stamped on your forehead, though i think Bill made the right decision with the pin he chose looks awesome

I honestly dont think there would be a problem with the deployment of an air bag at all. If anything, the emblem may come off, but I doubt it... but I'm not about to test that theory... I'm willing to wait on the chance I get in an accident to find out.

lol although as mentioned by others, it would be funny explaining a "C" on your forehead at the hospital, if that was the extent of your injuries!

CumminsTurbo22 02-04-2009 01:00 PM

Bill,
The part number CI0026 is not there anymore. i think you took the last one! :argh: looks like the CI0025 is going to have to be modded

elephantrider 02-17-2009 06:23 AM

nice lookin work bill -
so why are you saying that
the plastic piece cannot be
black ?

wildcat 02-17-2009 08:02 AM

You could do one in Black, I guess. I don't think the Black Cummins "C" will show up so well on it. I think you get a better Contrast with the background being a different color.

Az2500Cummins 02-21-2009 12:05 PM

Sounds like I gotta pry mine off and send it to Steve Smart (Billet Badges)

Don't sweat it, Hoss... You'd be surprised how many veteran people on this board have NO IDEA these articles exist!

If you want to have a look at more writeups I've done, go to search, select the advanced search function, and under keyword, type in 3rd Gen Tech. and for user name, type in wildcat. You'll come up with most of my articles here.
