EGR Valve Cleaning

Thought i would post this for any of you 6.0 PSD guys who might in the future be dealing with the dreaded EGR issue. This valve will get sooted up and not open and close right causing your rig to run poorly. The dealers have been told to stop replacing them and just to pull them and clean them so for you DIYers, this can be done in 20 minutes in your driveway.
First of all locate the EGR (shown in the pic.)
The red lines are not stock so don't get confused, these are water/Meth injection lines

1)unplug the wires.
2)remove 2 10 mm bolts
3)This is the fun part. I use a large set of water pump pliers, crawl up on my knees and position myself above the valve, get ahold with the pliers on the metal housing on the valve and pull up while i twist and wiggle (I don't twist and wigle, i twist and wiggle the EGR valve, but you knew that right?).
It takes a fair amount of strength so if you are not able to get it, maybe a buddy can help. Once you think it won't come out, keep trying and all the sudden it pops loose.
Take the valve and spray it with a can of carberator cleaner or brake clean - use a toothbrush to help get it clean.
4)Theres 2 O-rings that you can replace before you reinstall it IF they look bad, i didn't replace mine and haven't had a problem. Now reverse the procedure and reinstall it.
If you have a EGR code in the PCM you will have to get that cleared but she should run better now.

Nice right up Clay

Let me add a lil something to this. Clay is 110% accurate on the fact Ford wants us to clean the egr's now. But let me add my 2 cents. This very rarely works. 9 out of 10 I cleaned ever cleared up and the ones that did took a crap within 100 miles again. So long story short, you can clean it but you'll need a new one eventually. I'm hoping the aftermarket jumps on these things someday.

I cleaned mine once about 10k miles ago and have had no more codes since then. Although maybe i'm the lucky one.
Not saying your wrong at all but it has worked well for me.
Jon is the one i believe who told me originally how to do this.

Yeah

I'm not gonna say it doesnt work but it is a piss poor valve setup that I hope we can get fixed without bypassing it.

One way to fix this is to get custom tuning that disables the EGR, and then pull the up-pipe and block this headache off. I have actually turned my truck back to stock with the EGR blocked and had no problems no CEL, but it is common to get a CEL without disabling. I guess I'm lucky.

Nice right up Clay.

Hey Pat, Glad to see you on here! Hows Larry? Get his a$$ on here too.
I do want to invest in a tuner for this very reason soon.

Everything is great! I finally have Larry's help full time, so things are alot better now. Its summer time so things are crazy of course.

Take care Clay, call us some time.

Thanks for the write-up and picture to go with it! Pretty simple, but I would have never known if you didn't post. Also does anyone think maybe with some preventative cleaning during maintenance intervals, that it would prevent problems later down the road with the EGR?

dose anyone know where they sell the egr block off kit.
