No its usually one of the pulling team members hooting and hollering about 1/2 track then running with the truck as its pulling -

I see it all the time with tractor pulling also. It is usually because they need to do something to the tractor when the pull is over, but first they need to make sure that they get off the line. You know, back seat driver -

Must be a wildcat pull somewhere...the only people I've seen on the track besides the flagmen have been kinfolks advising young'uns participating in the antique tractor pulls...2 mph or slower. -
