Yes but if the issue was present it would come right back. Secondly codes are only indicators and may not even be related to the actual failure so calling it a catastrophic, there is no real code that defines a catastrophe

OK, thanks. Here is my situation. I have basically bought a 2009 GMC 3500. I took it to a diesel mechanic today and after he looked at it, the only thing he said he could find that might throw up a red flag was that a code(s) had been deleted recently. Of course, he has no way of knowing what the code was and to his credit said it very well might be something minor like the battery cable was unhooked or loose or the oil filter didn't seal properly. The truck is basically already mine and only has 50k miles on it so I am looking at 3 years and 50k miles left on the factory powertrain warranty. The service manager from the dealership is supposed to call me tomorrow to discuss. It's been almost 300 miles since the code/codes were deleted and nothing, no check engine light, nothing. Your thoughts?

i think you'll be fine if it hasn't come on in 300 miles. the ecu checks for any issues during every drive cycle.

I would find a new diesel tech personally. Your description of his explanation dosent give me much confidence in his knowledge or ability.
