Default gauge lights too bright

I have a set of autometer NV gauges and they are way too bright. I hooked them up to my dimmer switch and they are still to bright. I went to radio shack and got a potentiometer but it burnt up, it must not be able to handle the current. is there anything else I can try to hook up so the gauges wont be so bright?
would a resistor work? what value would be good

Really simple- get bulbs with a lower wattage. You can dim them too.

What color is the light? Get a felt pen and color the bulb a similar color or try two of the bulb covers.

Sorry - I was automatically thinking of Isspro. The lighting in the Autometers is different.

I would see what Autometer has to say.

maybe you could. I didnt look real hard but it didnt look like it was very easy to get into

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

ok auto meter makes a gauge dimmer thing. the tech also said I could hook a 1K .5watt resistor on each meter.
