Default Diesels bad reputation depending on the driver?

This is an interesting thought about Diesel trucks and their drivers:

Taken from a public forum:
------------------------------------------------------------
"The problem is now you have all the people with their diesel trucks and tuners blowing black smoke everywhere. They even refer to the black smoke setting on their tuners as the "fun" setting. I can't tell you how many times I hear diesel truck drivers talk about turning to the "fun" setting as they pass a hybrid or group of cyclists. Today's current diesel drivers are all to proud of the black smoke they can make."
------------------------------------------------------------
But unfortunately when Americans think of diesels they think of huge exhaust stacks pumoping out gobs of black smoke...
------------------------------------------------------------
I assume we aren't that bad, are we? -

I find it real stupid that all the kids around me ask me how to make alot of smoke, a few of them have gotten tickets for excessive smoke, its a real good way to cause an accident and its dumb as hell. Thats why i refuse to help them untill they have something better in mind than just to make smoke, why not just put a glob of grease in your muffler and itl smoke all you want.

If you were to go drive my truck right now it would barely even make a haze only in-between the shifts cause i dont de-fuel inbetween them, other wise it is as clean as a stock diesel. why cause smoke is not power.

and you know what it will run a 12.9 in the 1/4 at in street trim. -

I agree with 2500 the kids at my school have diesels and all they want is for theirs to smoke and it does because *no offense* certain programmer companies allow them to do that now if the companies could make the programmers make gobs of power with little smoke then i think public opinion would change drastically because you wouldnt have every teenager driving around rodding their engine and smoking like a train sure smoke is fun but not all the time. -

I dunno, it diffinetly pisses some people off and it dosent help the gerneral publics oppinion of diesels but alot of time if i pass someone and my truck blows some smoke they usually give me the thumbs up. One time i smoked out a guy in an open top Mercedes cause he was tailgateing me and he followed me into work, appoligized and asked for some advice on modifying his Ford 6.0L work truck. Bottom line is that no matter what your never gonna please everyone. -

The smoke issue is killing us. Sadly thats how people view diesel trucks as big coal rolling polluters. And to many young kids see smoke as power. I really wish tuners, especially EFI live guys, would quit writing tunes just for smoke. But its a free country, and your always gonna have those assholes, just like the fart can hondas, and off roaders who won't stay on trails and clean up. The minority screw the majority. -

Why would you make such a statement? What has a bicyclist done to you?

And the same goes for the types that think it's cool to dust (or smoke) off a prius or other small economy car!!

I happen to own a compact for work, a Scion XD. It's perfect for the work I do, the places I go and the mileage I put on daily (ranging from 150-500/day).

I also have an 89 FJ62 Landcruiser Wagon. A big, heavy, 9.5 mpg 4x4 machine that drives the eco-types crazy

So when you smoke someone like me out, you may be smokin' out a brother diesel fan.

I also agree with everyone else. Although I don't own a diesel (yet), I'm looking and will within the next year (want to pay cash for it).

Smoke is not power.

We as a whole MUST change the way we think about such things.

The diesel most people relate to, are the big rig, smoke pouring highway trucks of the past.

Todays diesels are as clean as gassers, some moreso

Doing stupid chit like purposely making smoke, especially heavy smoke, in public, smoking out bikers (or bicyclist), open air cars and Prius drivers, is not only stupid and dangerous, but in most places ILLEGAL!

We are our ownh worst enemy. We're ruining the reputation of everyone by such unnecessary antics

And, if you cause an accident, you risk losing your freedom and everything you've worked for financially, in a law suit!

Doesnt quite seem worth it to me.

We have to put our differences aside. Just because some Prius driver (I'd have one of those too if I could have afforded it when I needed it!) doesn't think diesels are eco-friendly, doesn't mean that we have to be chit heads to them?

The old 2 wrongs don't make a right seems to be applilcable here.

We have the same issues in the off road and boating communities

Boaters blasting through no wake zones, airboaters (I'm a federally certified airboat skipper as well) dusting off families at the ramp, blowing through heavilly populated river front/lake front areas late at night, no sound abatement, etc., off roaders not content to use the trails already established, all have worked to the govenments advantage in establishing laws prohibiting hours of operation, speeds and have resulted in the closure of some areas entirely to anything other than a hiker!

And as was previously mentioned, the TUNERS need to take a responsible and proactive role in this!

These devices creates an unlawful and potentially hazardous situation. Ask your attornies about vicarious liability

And all the waivers and notices on the box, probably won't do you any good in court, since it's relatively easy to determine to whom and why these systems are sold.
Once plaintiffs counsel gets past the initial objection and defense, it's pretty much a slam dunk.

Most people know nothing about a diesel except what they see on the road and on tv.

We need to set the example, before the government does it for us

Sorry for the rant -

what if you dont have a muffler? sorry had to say it i know what you mean and wether people want to admit it there is a little part inside ALL OF US that still likes to look in the rear or side view mirrors when we get on our trucks and see that cloud of smoke behind us. but there is a time and place for that and the problem is people dont know when to control that urge. i personally like to see that little cloud. with that said i know people readin this are thinkin "hey thats wasted horsepower" honestly dont care i guess i kinda took this the other way with what everyone else is sayin and i appologize for that but i guess the point im sayin is in my neck of the woods smoke is advertised horsepower. for some reason everyone around here thinks hey look at me ima hard ass cause my truck smokes like a freight train. if they look down on the diesel industry then i guess the eco- people would hafta look down on farming and the food they get. wether we want to admit it even most of the trucks that bring our food to grocery stores for the "prius driving" people it has been brought by a freight truck that has put excessive smoke in the air. couldnt count the times ive seen that either. well i guess i went a little off topic and now im done. say what you want about me but thats how i feel. -

Have a look over the pond- no smoking freight trucks because the worse the pollution the higher the highway toll. Actually they are cleaner than the gas cars. Trucks have Emission class 5( better) against Emission class 4 (worse)in gas operated cars. You will get this too sooner or later! -

Black smoke is truly wasted fuel. A diesel engine is a complete combustion engine when properly tuned. Smoke be it white or black is nothing more than something out of proper adjustment. Personally (if I could afford it) the only smoke from my truck would be that from the tires loosing traction from all the horsepower from a properly "tuned" engine. Although that can be expensive . From buying new tires (which mine needs) to paying reckless driving fines, Dang skinny pedal.Oh well thats my $.02 -

ive had friends that bought their diesel trucks because they "were tired of bieng smoked out by the big diesel trucks" so they get one throw a tuner on it so they can smoke the other people out? i just doesn't make any sence to me, yeah mine will smoke when i want it to but do I, no and im only 23, still young so some. its that mentality that makes it hard for all of us, they think that just because the ricer next to them is revving thier engine they have to black out the whole intersection?!? just confusing to me, i like my money in my pocket for other mods for my truck rather than in the air blowing in the wind! -
