There is no V6 Cummins. The Cummins in the pickups is an inline 6 cylinder and its in essense its making more hp and torque with just 6 cylinders.

A straight 6 diesel or any gas engine is a good thing in my opinion. here is a good read for ya. Straight-six engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
oops wrong article I will try to find the right oneLast edited by Jazz; 09-01-2009 at 06:43 PM.. |

For the same reason beer comes in 6 packs and not 8 packs.......hahaha. Actually I don't know but my guess is less friction and possibly the volume of each cylinder.

just because the powerjoke has a v8 doesn't more hp it is the displace of the engine. the piston are bigger to and the rod main bearing thats what the v8 don't hold up very long and why the cummins can go a million miles and the v8 only go 300,000 miles

They have the same power because of...
MARKETING! The Cummins is capable of more power because... It's built heavier. |

The 5.9 Cummins engine is a Medium duty. The Inline 6 cylinder has less interal friction and at least 20% fewer moving parts. A Medium Duty engine is built stronger so it will last longer. That is why you can find a lot of 800 hp 1400tq 5.9's with a stock bottom end The 7.3/6.0/6.4 powerstrokes are a light duty engine. Look at the Ford 650/750 for a while your choice was a 7.2 Cat or a 5.9 Cummins. A powerstroke was not a option. I am sure the 6.4 isn't to bad of a engine but it was designed for a pickup and for a certain power range. The question is how much power are they really built for?? |

Basic answer is that the Cummins is just a tougher engine than the Powerstroke is, but also it's not smaller than the Powerstroke, yeah it has 6 cylinders, but the displacement of the two engines is nearly the same give or take a few cubic inches. In stock form they're basically all tuned to be within 10hp/10ftlbs of each other to stay competitive, but once you get tuning big, that's when the overdesigned internals of the Cummins really shine through in terms of potential power numbers.

Looking back at the gassers a 300CI inline 6 cyl has more torque than a 302CI V8, the V8 claimed more HP. 99.9% of all class 8 trucks use an inline 6 cyl, more torque, longer lasting.
