Default Cummins vs Duramax vs Powerstroke

Well like it says, we know alot about all three, but which, and why do you choose the brand or motor you do( of the 3). Me i love the cummins hands down, not biased, i done my research on all 3. I love the Dodge/Cummins, cause it has the solid axle which i do make good use of, and i didnt buy this truck for a granny ride, afterall its a truck. Cummins motor is just amazing, less moving parts, more torque down low on RPM's, cast iron head and block. Best MPG's, most tunable. Offered in Ford F-550-650, Its a medium duty Engine, unlike the other 2. and i love the looks and always have i love the whole truck, but this is about the motors themselves. I would have to choose the Duramax Second, and Powerstroke Third. For too many reasons to list. But lets see all of your reasons, and back up of why you choose the perticular motor you do.

I just want honest answers and opinions, as i will be posting this on other sites too. Instead of bashing i just want real opinions, cause bashing is unnessary, cause afterall we all know Cummins is the best, so why argue. Ha haha ha.

I am a big fan of the Cummins motor. In my opinion it is alot easier to work on and it is more reliable. I am a ford guy but I do love my dodge even tho lots of folks say dodge is unreliable. I have driven all three and the cummins just has the power where I want it and it just seems the smoothest.

i have driven all three and i like the duramax for the stock power of the three although i didnt bomb this one yet so i cant comment on that. the cummins is a very inexpensive motor to get the hp and tq out of it and like ramanian said its simple to work on atleast the 94-02 models are thats what my expirience is with. now the ford 7.3 is reliable and also in the toughest truck ive ever seen or had the power isnt bad but is imo very hard and expensive to get. now my favorite of the three is the duramax for the stock power and from what i read is also the easiest to get power from with a programmer, exhaust, and a simple trimming of the intake which i will sooon find out. so there is my opinons and why hope you like and can reason with what i think if not LOL

cant disagree with that cumminsfreak

to this post... How many times do people have to try and start brand wars?

We all like what we like, and we have our own reasons why, we aren't going to change anyones opinion, and from what I read, nobody asked for a thread like this trying to help them decide on a vehicle purchase.

Like i said in my original Text, I dont want any bashing, or brand war. I also do think that a thread like this would help a person with a vehicle purchase, I mean who would you rather listen to.1 A salesman paid to basically lie and say anything to get a sale, or 2. Folks who have tried and tested these motors and trucks for years and know the ups/downs of each one. So yes this thread is necassary,IMO. Thanks for chiming in.

First off, let's be accurate here.

The Cummins B is not the only medium duty rated engine on the list. Both the T444E and VT365 are rated medium duty when installed in Navistar applications. And, for the record, the tag on the 7.3L, and IIRC the 6.0L as well, in Ford trucks says "light heavy duty" which translates to medium in the automotive/truck industry.

I can't speak for the 6.6L Duramax as I've never seen one in the bigger trucks to know for sure...

Misinformation breeds misinformation....sales people tell stories because they hear stories, and based on your reference to the second most popular diesel pickup urban legend--right behind Ford owns Cummin(g)s--I hesitate to believe you aren't much better than sales people when it comes being to a great knowledge source on these trucks.

Not being a jerk, just mentioning my opinion formed with the facts this thread has supplied me.

Cheers,

Dan

So then why is it that the T444E and VT365 are only rated medium duty when in the international applications? Is it the GVW? And Light Heavy Duty, gimme a break! In that case all 3 are" Light Heavy Duty" Or should i just say the cummins is " Light Medium Heavy Duty" I dont see any urban legend here. But who's arguing anyway.

I appreciate the feed back so far. Bashing was and is not my intent but if i had a dollar everytime people just read over that " not a bash thread" I would have some green. I am begining to notice that this is more of a sensitive subject to many. I just stated that Cummins is an option in the F-550-650 so is a CAT, i was stating why i liked it, some people just dont like to hear these things i guess.

Comeon saying im no better than a salesman that hurts.

The urban legend is that the Cummins is the only medium duty rated engine, and the others are rated light duty. It's not true, but the truth sometimes isn't as fun to brag about...and the emissions labels really do say "light heavy duty". Seriously....like a "light heavyweight" weight class in boxing or MMA...it's a widely used classification phrase.

Also, Cummins supplies their engines to Dodge as assembled. There is a "Dodge version" variant but for the most part it is identical to the other B's and Dodge works around Cummins' design.

FoMoCo is given a Navistar engine that is tweaked to operate in FoMoCo's design parameters---for example the Navistar version of the VT365 does not spin up to 4400rpm like the 6.0L does, and there are many design changes to compensate for this. Perhaps the emissions labels are changed for these more chassis specific designs. Possibly the same for the Isuzu Duramax 6.6L as well.

International historically only offers its engines in their own platforms. With exception to the Ford light truck contract, this has always been the case. Caterpillar and Cummins are engine manufacturers, so it is in their best interests to offer their product line in as many OEM chassis as possible.

International has a product line that competes directly with the Ford F650-F750 line, and offers a wide variety of their own powerplants in it. They have no reason to offer their engines to the F650-F750 line. This fact has lead to some saying "it's because they aren't good enough engines" when this isn't the truth. Just more rumor/legends.

At least you didn't spell Cummins with a G. j/k

I'm not sure what he drives...he's hard to understand, goes off on rambling tangents about bagpipes, hummus, and William Wallace a lot. I remember seeing him on TV a few years ago at his home in Oregon and he had a Ford pickup, but I think it was a F-150....

And to keep in the spirit of the thread, my order:

1. 12v mechanical Cummins 6BTA
2. 5.9L Cummins CR
3. 7.3IDI Turbo
4. Duramax 6.6L
5. TIE 7.3L Powerstroke 99-03 aftercooled and 24v Cummins ISB
6. 7.3IDI NA
7. 6.4L Powerstroke
8. 6.7L Cummins CR
9. cow **** in a bag
10. various Yugos
11-99. polka
100. 6.0L Powerstroke

Cool...are they the 6.6L V8 or the 7.8L I6?

Some of my customers have the 7.8L I6 in their GMC 7500 COE line trucks.
