Default 2004 cummins

I was looking for trucks today and found the PERFECT truck in my price range. It's a 2004 quad cab short cummins with a 5 speed tranny under 120k miles for $20,000. It's had 3 owners with a clean carfax other than a minor collision.

My question. To you guys is is this truck a 5 or 6 speed? I thought they quit making 5 speeds in the 2nd gen dodges. Is this truck a SO or something? The dealership person I spoke with was a woman and she had no clue what high output was so I didn't even bother. The trucks about 2 hours away so I need to know if it's worth looking at. Are their ny problems I should look for, and if it really is a 5 speed is that as reliable as the 6 speed NV5600's??

Thanks guys

Yeah it could still be an NV4500. Yes very reliable transmission.

Well the truck does have a 5 speed so no doubt its a SO. How does the SO compare to the HO as far as engine internals and everything? Will it pull as heavy loads the same that a HO will? Also is it still as reliable? What are the gear ratios?

Sorry for the questions but gotta move quick this truck is being looked at from all over its got low mileage!

1999stroker, im trading the ford in when i find the right truck. I cant afford to repair it anymore..

IIRC the hp difference from SO 305 to HO 315. HO will have better low end then SO, but the SO with have more top end. Either will do what you want it to. Both HO and SO are very reliable. Engine is the same on both just different programming for the pumps.

The SO is more reliable? Im in lexington an the truck is on carrollton. But im leaving tomorrow to go back home to pikeville. Just trying to figure out if this truck is worth the trip to look at. So the only difference is low end torque and the pumps??

O3-04 had the good pistons & No 3rd injection which the 04.5-06 had which caused all the piston melt downs!! They changed back the same pistons which are in the truck your looking at! Just some info, I had a 04.5! If you need anymore call me, I'm not into Alot of typing!

I'd rather have more of a reliable motor because you can add more hp! I'm not exactly sure big difference between the so & ho! Buts that's the difference in the 04.5! I hope I didn't confuse you!
