Default Stock Turbo and Cavitations

So I am thinking of swapping out the stock turbo on my 2000 7.3, I have been looking at the ATS Aurora kit. I have gotten to the point that every time I pull my 35' Toyhauler, I cannot stand to hear that cavitating/popping sound...Anyway, I am somewhat mechanically inclined but tackling a turbo swap seems a bit beyond my abilities. After looking at the install sheet for the ATS turbo, it seems do-able, but after buying the kit I wouldn't have the money to pay for labor for install.

Do any of you have any input? I would like to find someone that could help me do it so I can learn/understand more. Any comments on the ATS kit? I would appreciate any comments whether its good or bad. Thank you for looking at my post!

Do you have a link to the turbo? There are better options out there IMO.

What popping sound are you hearing?

The sound I hear is when there is a slight load on the motor before the transmission kicks down a gear, and from what I understand the stock turbo is "cavitating". It sounds like an intermitten air sucking through a tube.

Here is a link to the Turbo Kit:

Hmmm. I'm not sure I've ever heard of a turbo Cavitating. Hopefully somebody else knows something about that.

I wouldn't get that turbo kit. What are your plans for the truck? What injectors are you running?

I've got stock injectors...the cavitating issue is very common, most of the mechanics I talk to know about it and I've watched some video on that talk about and address the problem. You can access a video on that same link address that shows an excerpt from a speed channel show that talks about as well.

The mods I've done to the Truck are: K&N Cold air intake, down tube and straight 4" exhaust and a Superchip programmer...new rebuilt tranny with upgrades.

My plans for the truck are to continue using as a DD and pull my trailer, I don't have any other plans at this point. I want moderate Horsepower/Torque gains without compromising the integrity too much. I'm more concerned about reliability than beating someone to the next light, but if there is some unused HP/torque available I would throw a little scratch ($$) at it to get it.

I'll have to do some research on the Cavitating thing. Only time I've ever heard of it is in IDI's and them having issues with their coolant.

Look into getting a 38r... Almost half the price and plenty turbo for what you want. Also, look into getting rid of that Superchips programmer and get some custom tunes on a TS style chip.

He is talking about surge... There are several fixes for surge without going to a $3000 turbo system that is way overkill for your power level.

Look for a ATS compressor housing. This will stop 99% of any surge. You could also add a 1.00 exhaust housing to the turbo without issue that would help surge, lower EGT and pick up a bit of top end HP.

You do NOT need a turbo, or turbo system.

However, if you want to upgrade to a better turbo that will work good with your stock injectors then the Garrett 38R is a good choice.

Ok Thank you CSIPSD, I really appreciate the input. I really don't want to spend $3000 for a Turbo Kit...

Since you mention Injectors, I haven't been able to find much on the internet for info on aftermarket injectors, don't know if I need them, but when the day comes to replace one or two, I plan on replacing all of them. To be honest I get confused trying to chase info about upgrading motor stuff. I have entertained the thought of a TS type chip too. If I am to not get really wild, are there injectors available that are more HP than stock?

Yes. One of our sponsors on the site, Rosewood Diesel, rebuilds injectors and is very good at it. His prices are top shelf as well..

Your injectors are AD 140cc split shots. If you don't plan on going crazy, I would suggest looking into some AC 160cc single shot injectors. You will need tunes to run them because you will be going from split to single but they will give you a little increase in power and run a little better.

Thank you for the injector info 95powersmoker...that is exactly the info I was wanting, I don't know about all the other parts on the market, and really I don't want to know, I trust yours and others on here suggestions...the 160cc's injectors sound like what I am looking for.

I plan on getting a TS chip custom tuned, I assume that will suffice?

Where abouts in Washington are you from?
