Be sure to get there for a cold start. Feel the engine before starting it to ensure.
Check the oil. Ask how often it was serviced. (looking for 3-5k)Also, ask what type of oil he is running.
Check the turbo compressor wheel by taking the intake tube off. Make sure it's not dusted
Check the Auto tranny fluid, Look for color and smell.
Check for leaks and drips.
Check u-joints and front end.
If its 4x4, make sure you engage that on your test drive.

Not sure what the miles are but if its a high miler, find out what things he has replaced and where the work was done. Make sure the tranny feels strong.

Listen to the transmission when idling if it makes noise that's the torque converter thats going back, but i mean common stuff everyone looks for. See how well it starts, how well it was taken care of. could do a compression test to cause cylinder number 8 if i remember likes to loss some compression. Does it build psi good and doesn't have boost leaks.

well im i know the basics to look for i built my ford cummins from the ground up i didnt know if there were any perticular issues with that year of ford to look for. it is a 4x4 just what i glanced at it has an exhaust and intake test driving it saturday so i will look more in depth. i didnt know if the 7.3 had anything known to have wrong with it like the 6.0 had my dad owned 2 fords with the 6.0 and hated them so thats why im looking at the 7.3

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

also what are some power upgrades i can do withought hurting the tranny i was thinking a whicked wheel and that was about it. im not wanting hardly any performance im used to this 500hp cummins in my 96 f350 im looking for something mild that i dont have to get into the motor or tranny for. the ford cummins is to much being a 5speed with a super stiff clutch wanting something the wife can drive

If you get a good chip, it shouldn't. If you get a crappy off the shelf programmer, its possible. Depends on the condition of the tranny and how you drive.
