Default looking for additional advice and correct me if I'm wrong

Hey guys had a friend of a friend call me to tell me about a problem he having with his truck (2000 f-250 7.3 148,000) he recently started his truck in the morning (roughtly 58-65 Degrees) and was in a rush and did not allow the motor to warm up and took off. As driving down the road the truck died pulled to the side and try to restart it and cranked for a while (5-10 sec) and when the motor fired a huge cloud of black smoke came out. This has happened twice within the last 2-3 weeks. Told him what I have heard many times in this web site that diesels need heat to run well without it they act weird (don't know if this applies in this kind of weather). It has been 6 months since he has changed the water and fuel filter "WAY" beyond 10000 miles I told him to start there I change mine every 2 oil changes 7000-10000 miles is this correct? He has replaced the CPS very recently. Claims he has oil leaking from the non-servicable plug if true what can be done about this. Wondering if the name is self explanitory? Also mentioned that he has a special tractor oil his mechanic recommended synthetic and told him he doesn't need to change it for a year. (this does not seem wise to me can anyone confirm this?) Sorry for the long story appreciate your input.

OUCH... Got to change the oil in these things!

Sounds like you have a bad fuel filter number one, but I would have to see the smoke to really understand it.

I am up here this weekend again, if you need some help there let me know. I need to change my wheel bearing and we could all work together!
