Think it's basicly a bolt in. Some things need to be shifted around a little IIRC but it's supposed to be easy.

FWIW, I know plenty of high power 7.3 guys runnin the 7.3 IC. Unless you're havin issues, run what you got.

yea i have heard that the 6.0 has plastic ends compared to 7.3 which is metal. so in the long run the 7.3 i/c can hold more pressures and the i/c swap lowers egt like 30 degrees. from what i see in your sig. i dont really think you need the 30 degree drop

You gotta be pretty hot to NEED an IC swap, but if you tow alot, it might make a difference.

Both the 7.3 and 6.0 IC's had plastic ends. Seems to me that 05-07 IC were a bit better construction though.

I'm runnin mine until an end blows off or it splits.

6.0 intercoolers are Junk. Stay with the stock 7.3 intercooler or go with a good aftermarket.

if you are going to do it and ignore what you see on here. your gonna need two new intercooler boots. i beleive 4inch reduced to 3.5 inch or 3 inch. not positive which one it is

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

this is what you would need

6.0L intercooler
One 3x3x8" intercooler boot
One 3x3.25x8" intercooler boot
One 3" boot clamp

Thank you for this very useful post.. It was both helpful and full of facts...

There is nothing wrong with the 6.0 IC, however, there is also no reason to swap your 7.3 IC out for one. I did, and saw less then a 50* drop in temps.

OK Smartypants, I will give you my facts.
I had to replace 3 of them this summer. One was on my friends 04 Stock 6.0 he was pulling at most a 5000 pound load. The other 2 were on my dads 05 6.0 during harvest. First intercooler blew with a empty trailer. Second intercooler was 2 days latter.
So long story short 6.0 intercooler is junk. Putting in a 6.0 intercooler as a upgrade to a 7.3 is crazy. Not even considering the proven unreliability of the 6.0 intercooler (have you noticed all Ford dealers have them in stock) But actually go out and buy one for a upgrade to a 7.3 is flat out crazy. But then again I like going home at the end of the day
So I think my post was useful, keep the stock 7.3 intercooler or buy a aftermarket!!!

Your friends have bad luck... There are just as many failures on the plastic end tanks for the 7.3 as there is for the 6.0, which is not that many.

The reason they have them in stock is because of internet rumor that the 6.0 gives better cooling. It does, but its not worth the cost.

I have tested mine for about 3 years now to well over 50psi without issue...

I know a lot of people that own or have owned a 7.3 PS including myself. And I never heard of one blowing a intercooler. I am not saying it can't happen but it has to be extremely rare.

I blew off the intercooler pipe a few times but no big deal.

I have a hard time believing that the Ford dealer is stocking 6.0 intercoolers in case a person with a 7.3 might stop in for a upgrade.
