Default 2000 7.3L cranks but wont start help please

hi guys apparently im not the only one to have this problem. i read thru jovee's post and tried to follow the same steps but i have a few questions. 1st off the same thing happened to me i started it up everything looked great checked all my gauges all was fine put it in reverse and let off the brake and it died. hit the key again fired for a second and died again. now it wont even chuckle. this is the second times its happened to me but last time i just tried turning it over a few times and it finally fired up this time its been over a day and nothing is happening. i tried the gas rag it still didn't fire the tach moves as i crank the wait to start light comes on alll the lights go thru their cycle when i turn the key on i just replaced the cam sensor and the fuel filter completely drained the filter housing and put fresh fuel in it checked the hpo res there was oil but it was down by where the housing gasket is is that normal or should it be against the top where the plug is? also i do have an oil leak unlike jovee my valve covers are leaking some. there is some white smoke coming out of the tailpipe that has a really strong smell to it bout burnt the hair out of my nose. any ideas please help thanks.

Have you had the cam sensor recall done?

What cam sensor did you put in it when you changed it? Don't rule it out - I've had those damn things no good right out of the damn bag.

It should be about 1" or so from the fill plug on the HPOP reservoir, so you might have a problem there as well.

Do you have a scan tool? Or access to one?

the cam sensor was just recently replaced a few months ago it was the updated design the grey sensor with the silver bracket i read somewhere that the black sensor with the gold bracket was actually better and had a stronger field and that the grey sensor produced more injector issues so when i found a black one i jumped all over it. so the oil level should be about 1" down from the very top of the hpop plug cause mines quite a bit more then an inch what might cause that level to drop because my dipstick reads that im full. my buddy just got a genesis scan tool i called him tonight he said we might be able to set something up tomorrow around 7 to scan it but if you know someone in the tampa area that wouldn't mind lending me a hand with one i would appreciate it.

i meant to add something else i was thinking about it today i've only owned the truck for about 2 weeks now but while i was driving it this happened a couple of times but i remember it acting as though it were going to stall and then catching itself but this usually happened as i was driving like i would come to a stop and it would do it it did happen one time after starting it in the morning it kinda idled down and then came right back up and every now and then at idle i would feel something in the floor boards that felt like a miss to me not 100 percent sure but i kno i dont get that feeling in the floor board when im driving and its not all the time. but never got a SES light either. hopefully that might help ring a bell.

how soon after changing the fuel filter did this happen? could be air in the fuel system.

just re-read your original post and it sounds like you may have changed the fuel filter after this started...is that correct?

i changed the fuel filter after this happened. what would be the best way to test if fuel is reaching the rail take off the feed line to the rail and turn the key?
