Default 1999 Ford F250 7.3- towing prep

I recently purchased 14' dump trailer, 14,000 lbs max., and installed sides, roof and rear doors to help in moving my personal property. overall height is now 10' above ground and front is 84 inches wide. gooseneck setup, exposed front face of trailer is 48 inches above gooseneck.

hauling this from upstate ny to charlotte, nc. purchased wind deflector for truck as it seems that the 48" x 83" flat face is hampering my speed.

truck is crew cab., and engine is stock with no modifications. had truck thoroughly " inspected" to make sure all components are working correctly.

i have driven to charlotte with trailer pretty fully loaded, did not weigh it, and return trip was quite less weight but still suffered in speed.

preparing to buy some performance product, chip or other device to increase HP etc. also told to install EGT to keep from burning up turbo.

need to know what folks have used and like in regards to all the different products out there. just watched the 6 position chip install video as well as one to install the EGT.

i have researched the bully dog GT platinum programmer as well as the Flashpaq 1842. being old school i like the idea of a multi program chip with selector ****.
but really i don't have a clue which things are better than others.

can you help? at this point i am not to concerned about cost, assuming whatever i do is under $1,000 when done.

thanks

If it where me id do gauges intake exhaust and a chip
Intake- I have a tymar seems to work since its just a filter and a piece of pipe
Gauges- Id get egt trans temp and boost on a triple pillar pod
Exhaust- doesn't really make a difference who you go with just the choice between stainless and not and a 4 inch systems good unless ur looking to put a lot more power adders on
Chip- power hungry performance makes a good six position chip with custom tunes for cheap
I definatly wouldn't chip ur truck without gauges and an exhaust will keep ur egts low and the air filter will give u a lil kick for cheap
Good luck

jimmer4dat,
thanks for the response and suggestions.
i spent a fair bit of time reviewing past discussion on this site.

i agree with you about the gauges especially exhaust temp..
i forgot to mention that i currently have a K & N air filter and maintain it well.

so this afternoon i placed and order with power hunger for the Hydra / CTS setup. i will install the pyro as instructed when unit arrives. the Edge CTS should monitor the other systems and the new EGT should provide another safety factor for turbo and more.

the establishment i ordered it from, East Coast diesel, also has an exhaust system, approx. $400, that would provide additional HP gains and lower exhaust temps.. can be stainless or not.

i will see how the truck performs with new chip and look into the exhaust system as warranted or desired.
as for the transmission it is a standard and i gather the gauge for tranny would be for an automatic.

thanks for your response and all the info the site has available. it certainly helped me in my typical time crunch. it is folks like you who help to keep the rest of us engaged and motivated regarding our vehicles.

i am sure that there are many more things one could do with this truck and engine.

i can see why people love the 7.3. i certainly do. have a safe 4th July.

i will attempt to update this message after my next journey to NC as to how truck performed with new goodies.

You got a good start, I would ditch the K&N asap and would be doing exhaust for sure.

joebob3093,
thanks for feedback- rec'd the Hydra part of my order waiting / inquiring as to the status of the Edge CTS.

you recommend ditching the current K&N - jimmer4dat uses a Tymar- - do you have something in mind for its replacement?

i am not able to change exhaust before my next trip to NC. i will be in Ford F250 country, Mooresville,NC, where i am sure that i can find a really good exhaust system. I can only imagine what my options will be.

one of the options is stainless steel exhaust. without searching this site for discussion on this topic- is the stainless desirable for internal or external corrosion or both? are there other benefits from stainless?

do you have any feedback / input as to exhaust manufacturers to look at?

thanks very much.

A DIY intake like the tymar is good if you don't want to spend a ton of money. Other options are the AFE or S&B intakes.

Exhaust is exhaust, you can get away with anything and be fine. Stainless is nice if you have the money to spend on it. If you don't you can run anything and be fine. Even just cutting the cat and muffler out is a huge help.
