Default 2001 7.3 throwing IDM code and shutters at 40 mph

I JUST purchased this truck and it ran fine on the test drive and i purchased it knowing he had replaced the no. 8 injector and IDM but he said the idm code wouldnt clear. Knowing this i offered a low ball price which he took. The next morning the truck idles a lil rough and when i reach 40ish mph it shutters. If i let off or give it more throttle it stops. I replaced the IDM which looked new or reman with a used one a friend had and now all symptoms are still there but now the SES light goes in and out!!! I let off throttle it goes away, press throttle it comes back!!

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I forgot to mention every now and then once in drive the truck remains at idle even when i floor the throttle!!.. This usually goes away in 5-10 seconds didnt know if that couild be related.

The truck only shutters in the a.m. when I first leave for work but not at lunch or errands during the work day. The ses light problem is constant though.

Get a scanner to read all your codes. That will help a lot in diagnosing what exactly is the problem.

It's pulling the IDM code and the "wait to start" is burned out.

That's on a Snap-on scanner not a ford scanner.

This diagnosis requires wiring diagrams and the ability to read them and some specialty equipment. That being said the process of testing is far too in depth to post here, and we would need the actual code numbers. It involves load testing or ohm testing the wiring from the idm to injectors, idm to ecm and lastly injector resistance. I recommend finding a qualified shop for this job.

Ok thanks! I did notice yesterday if I let the truck warm up for at least 30 min in the morning the shutter doesn't happen at all but SES light is still there.

Took it to ford and its miss firing on 3 cylinders plus the idm code. He's gonna check the uvch and do a compression check today.

I had the exact same symptoms you are having. The problem ended up being that the injector connectors that go through the valve cover gasket had come loose. As soon as i got up to about 30-40 mph the truck would shutter. The tab that holds the connector together is a bit weak and gets weaker over time. if u cut 1/4 off of a quarter and fit it under that tab it will never come lose again and the valve cover itself holds it from ever coming out.
