Default 97 Ford F250 7.3 PS Shut Down No Start/Smoke

Hello Bombers,

I'm new to the forum, I've been searching the internet for an answers for several days and have learned a ton of stuff but I'm still having a no start/no smoke problem after preforming several different test.

I purchased the truck a month ago with a new delivery fuel pump installed. It ran great till the other day. I had just returned home from pulling a boat to the lake and was unhooking the boat trailer when the truck just shut off. It cranks to beat hell but no start. So I searched the internet for answers reading several forums with the same issues never finding out what resolved the no start no smoke issues.

I checked the following items on the PS, all of the fuses, which were good but the fuse #8 IDM 30 amp under the hood had no power to it with just the key on. Checked the hpop reservoir, which was full, cleaned battery terminals, replaced cps, which also moved the tachometer needle while cranking, swamped out relays, checked fuel canister level and made sure the mechanical delivery pump was working which it was.checked the ICP for oil residue and had non. There is no fuel or oil leaks. The fuel canister heater has been disconnected. I did the service bulletin #103 and checked the IDM harness pins for resistance which was good. The only thing I'm leaning towards is the IDM could have failed. I don't have a scanner to read the codes if there were any nor do I have a fuel pressure gauge or oil gauge to preform a pressure test. The other thing that has me baffled is why there is no power to the #8 fuse for the IDM how does it get power could it be from the PCM or while cranking, I'm not sure if it is suppose to have voltage while the ignition is on but it is dead on both fuse spades with the ignition on. I have talked with a couple Diesel technicians explaining what I have done but they want it hauled in to work on it. I also asked about the square fuel in water module located between the hpop reservoir and the fuel canister . Could that be a no start item that could have failed? Didn't see to much information about it online, and it seems the technicians didn't no anything about it or they were confused when I asked, they said it must be an add on. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well I did the OBD2 scan test & it came back negative no codes. I figured so since the check engine light wasn't on. Any response on the #8 fuse having no power. I'm sure someone has a test light.

Talked with a diesel tech who will look @ it after the 4th. Around a $100 to diagnosis it. I just have to load it up & get it there.

Any ideas pm the #8 fuse under the hood. When does it have voltage?

lose the K'nN intake and go with a 6637 set-up....won't help your no-start, but the truck will breath easier when you do get it runnin'....hth

Thanks for the response. I had taken the truck to a local diesel shop to have it diagnosed. It came up with a bad IDM. So I ordered 1 off of eBay out of Florida & put it in. Problem solved.

Two more problems occurred after the install of the new IDM.

Problem 1. I had a miss @ higher rpm and barely noticeable @ idle. Problem was I replaced the CPS with a new auto store one during my no start problem. I put the old 1 back in & the truck runs great. So I returned the CPS to the auto store & picked up a spare @ the Ford parts counter.

Problem 2 is my ABS light is on, never was before. I have no codes with my reader, so I'm thinking it may need to be cleared with a diagnostics scanner. Not for sure but something I'll have to check into.

One more thing the Ford parts dept. wanted $900 for the new IDM the diesel shop wanted $500 and I purchased from eBay for $139 & free shipping with the return of my old one for a core with lifetime warranty. They also covered all the shipping cost.
