Default 2004 6.0 fuel pump issue

long story short one day my truck instantly started running terrible. put it on the scanner and had a couple codes for cylinder 1 and 3 contribution faults. the truck would start fine but as i got down the road i would lose all power and the truck would die. so i checked my wiring, and everything is good. so then i bought the fuel pressure regualtor upgrade from ford, and it still did it. so then i got in the truck and turned the key over to hear the fuel pump run, and to me it seemed like it was taking forever to build pressure and turn off. so i went ahead and purchased a new fuel pump. and i went ahead and removed the gas can and cleaned it out just in case if i had bad fuel.

well today after doing all that i ran it and it ran pretty good, im no diesel specialist so i kinda over exhaggerate on if its running right or not. well when i got back home i cycled the key agin, and it still seems like the fuel pump is running excessively long, and 3/4 of the way thru the cycle it kinda sounds like it cuts out or something.
after replacing the fuel pump i have not put my power puck back on or my superchips programmer. maybe i could be freaking out and this is normal? im just scared to mess something else up or to get stranded again if it shuts off.

Pretty sure these pumps run constant, they have a return line that bleeds off excess presure, I just upgraded my spring last weekend and it definately sounds different, the sound I hear is the excess presure being released, because it is probably much higher than it has been for a while. Now on your truck you might be hearing the brake booster reach presure, they have a motor that brings brakeline presure up until the hydro assist is presurized from the powerstearing pump, kinda sounds like a fuel pump then you hear kind of a "clunk". the fuel pumps are pretty quiet, I really have to get out and listen for it on my truck.

Have you checked and when was the last time you changed fuel filters? Are you using the ford or international filters?

sure did, i replaced both of them when i did the fuel pressure regulator upgrade. i just did head gaskets on this thing about 3500 miles ago. and i did them then as well. the first set of filters i used was napa, now this last set i put in was from advance auto parts but i forgot the brand, same price though.

get rid of those filters and get some international or oem ford filters in the fuel side. Somebody maybe able to post the link that shows the differences in them that make them bad for the truck. Has to do with the length of the filter and certain tabs on the filter.

to around 5:27 in the video.

When you first turn the key the pump will run for a little bit, and will continue to run as long as you start the truck. If you just turn the key forward and let the pump run it will run for 10-15 seconds or so and then just shut off.

A fuel pressure gauge would have been a better idea instead of purchasing a fuel pump you probably didn't need. The pump creates 55+psi of pressure in the first 2 seconds or so of turning the key. Once the truck is started it runs constantly like Bob said, and just bleeds off at the regulator on the fuel bowl.

Test your fuel pressure if you still think there is a fuel issue. Diagnose, verify, repair. Throwing parts at it wont fix it (or it might, but it's not the right way to do it).

Most of the aftermarket fuel filters don't have the water membrane on them for the lower filter, which means they're not separating water like they should. Stick with International or motorcraft fuel filters. I know Advanced Auto does sell the motorcraft fairly reasonably ~$55 or so.

So when the truck died you never finished the story... did it restart, did you have to be towed...?? Have you tried scanning the truck for trouble codes yet?

Well my auto zone sells the motor craft filter... But when I checked them they don't have the water seperater membrane.... And it's cheaper to go to international...

well when it died i immediately tried starting it again, without letting it build up and it didnt start so i got my code reader out real quick and cleared the codes (contribution 1 and 3, control module KAM) and then i let it build up pressure agin then it started but ran like complete ****, luckily i got home then parked it. then we played with the wiring to the injectors and stuff and i kept testing it by driving around the neighbor hood and it would always start off fine then i would get the same results (crazy shaking in the front end, sounds like the motor is misfiring, and loss of power) so i then replaced the fuel filters and it didnt work, so then i replaced the fuel pump and i havnt had the contribution codes come up anymore. but i dontknow if its just me, but it sounds like there is alot more going on under the truck when i turn the key on than what it sounded like before. and sometimes when i am driving it seems to have a slight vibration? would this have to do with the new fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump? i have a super chips programmer and i diablo power puck installed on the truck, would me running both of those been the reason as to why the fuel pump could have gone out? i never run the super chips on performance, just milage xs, and the power puck turned about a quarter of the way. just one day i had it on performance and i hope it didnt burn my pump up.

but back to now, even when i take off it seems as if the truck jerks more when it changes gears, i know i had an issue with the turbo clamps after i installed the new head gaskets, i didnt get them aligned and tight enough and it made the truck run awful. but i dont think that would be the issue again.

i really hope im not just over reacting, i just dont want to break down over something someone could have easily helped me with before hand. i travel alot racing motocross so i would hate to be broke down with all my bikes... haha
