has anybody taken the ac compressor off their 6.0..do you have any tips cuz it looks like its gonna kick my *** tomorrow

 

You will need to bleed the lines for the AC, should have a shop reclaim the refrigrant to be environmentally friendly, if your trans filter is mouted on front its not too bad if its on fraimrail near AC it sucks, ther are 3 bolts that hold it in place plus the one bolt that holds the lines on, being an 04 truck really helps here because you can get at least that bolt from the fenderwell area, the next thing to take out of the way is the ground cable and bracket that is right below and to the inside of the pump lets you het your hand in behind pump, there is a bolt on top front of pump that is easy to get to but save that one for last sinse it is easy it will hold the pump in place while taking the othe 2 bolts out. We use ratcheting wrenches to remove the pump, easiest way, 2 bolts are 10mm head and 1 is a 13mmor 14mm, forget which, if your trans filter is on frame right next to pump it would really help to remove motor monts nuts from underneath and jack the motor up at least an inch to remove pump.

On a single alternator set up, a long ratcheting wrench, like a torque wrench set high enough that you're not fighting it, can be used to release the tension on the serpentine belt. A long breaker bar will not work because of the angle the head needs to be. After removing the aft, clip on shround, you will be able see the square, 1/2 inch drive recepticle, but you will have to do this by feel. Sorry, can't watch and plug in the ratchet. Anyway, push toward driver side, remove belt, ease wrench back, R&R a/c compressor, reinstall belt, retrieve wrench. That's right, it's easier to just leave it there once you've released the tension.

 

good catch Karl, I always just cheat now and loosen the alternator up and let it tilt forward to remove belt, easy to put back on that way too, I stole the idea off someone on DB and works well and alot less frustrating.

Yeah I can't even get a breaker bar at my tensioners (yes, plural). I just pull the belt up on, and removal I undo the top alt. I ran into a link for some cool tools for this too...

Mike, just so you know, those plastic ones won't touch the trans cooler lines, I have aluminum ones and had to push like hell on them to get the lines out, He isn't going to need to remove any of the quick disconnects to replace the pump, it has a bolt on housing that holds the lines to the pump and seals with Orings.

 

Ok good to know. Never really had to mess with the A/C system at all...
