So at full throttle my tranny kicks in a little harder than is like but not bad enough to concern me. As I was cleaning my egr I decided to check my fluid in the tranny and sure enough it was a little low by a qt. Or less so being as I pretty much have a stock pile of Lucas diff and tranny fluid I decided to put a bottle of the tranny fluid in when I noticed something... On the dip stick it read Mercon sp... Hmm that's the same tranny fluid I had to use on my jaguar. Which when I owned my jaguar I did a little research on the tranny fluid and every one claimed that Mercon sp in not compatible with any other tranny fluid. So I called Lucas directly and they said they have no studies of it working or not with that type of oil and I should use at my own risk....

It got me to thinking though... I used to work at 4wheel parts and when ever a truck got a tranny pan we re filled the tranny with royal purple and a qt of the Lucas... Were we ruining the cords tranny this whole time?

My question is being as Lucas is prob one of the most popular name brand oils on the market I'm sure a ton of people have used it with out knowing Mercon sp compatibility I mean hell if I never peeked that jag I would of been the first person to say its ok to use it in this particular tranny so has any one here used it with no ill affects because something tells me the people in the jag forum just didnt know what they were talking about

The TorqShift was introduced with the 2003 6.0. Prior to that the 7.3L had a 4 speed AOD that was a standard Mercron fluid transmission.

I recommend contacting NADM, Sun Coast, ATS, maybe even Hughes Performance to get your answer. Let's be honest, their are guys on here advocating GAS 10W/30 oil in their diesels.

So before you make a $5500 mistake (estimated cost of a rebuilt TorqShift and don't forget the converter cause you'll probably smoke the lock up clutches, too) do some checking. Kragen has a universal trans fluid that meets the Mercon SP requirement for about 5~6 bucks a qt.

 

I try to avoid lucas anything but I would not put their ATF in a 5R110. The solenoids that control that trans spec a nice light weight fluid and the wrong one could destroy them.

 

I agree, I stay away from Lucas stuff as well.

FYI, Mercon SP has been superceded by Mercon LV now. I will be sticking with the Mercon stuff, it's good fluid.

 

Not to totally hijack but who is doing that? I have seen some people talk about running MC diesel or Rotella T5 10w-30 but not Valvoline SL 10w-30 or pennzoil platinum or something like that.

 

I don't think he was pointing to anyone in particular, but you see some crazy things on the forums and off from time to time... happens in any motorsport.

 

I could have read a post wrong, who knows? But the dumbed down point is that it says "Mercon SP" on the dipstick for a reason. You don't put Type F into a Turbo 350 trans, do you?

If that doesn't cornfuse things! There I was, happily web surfing along reading the accolades of MERCON LV and it's compatibility with MERCON SP and I find this on Ford's site. Is this an effort to keep us buying SP at $14/qt?

 

Can you even still buy SP? My trans was just rebuilt a couple months ago, the tech told me he used LV in mine and said to continue using it. It was powerstroketech87 on here...
