Default 4WD Sensor?

Not a Ford guy here just had a quick question. My dad has an 05 f350 and has had some trouble with it going into 4wd. He had heard there is a sensor that goes bad and wont allow the hubs to lock in and we were just curious about any truth in this and where to get one how expensive, any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
