6.0 possible mods and takeoff lag advice
I bought my first diesel. It's a 2003 Ford F250 super duty 6.0. Bought it used so don't know much about engine mods already done but it does have an aem brute force intake. I'm looking for advice on reducing takeoff lag. Turbo slow to spool up then it launches around 20 mph. Any advice on getting a better takeoff? Also what a good way to go as far as mods for more power out of this beast. It's sitting on 37 x 12.50 on 20 inch rims and has a 6 inch lift. I want to get more power to tires cause I want to upgrade to 40s or 44s.

The million $ question: "How far can I push it before I start having problems?" I don't know and can't guess, but many say the milder tunes are generally safe. My SCT came with 3 standard tunes and 3 custom tunes to be later defined and ordered. A tune should dramatically reduce the turbo lag, but not eliminate it. Especially punching at 20MPH, where it has already started to spool up.
I can only tell you my experience. Got and installed the SCT, and while first setting it up and playing with it accidentally loaded the medium street tune. IIRC was ~60Hp gain. My first reaction was OMG where did this truck come from?
I had already scheduled the bullet proofing W/O studs. After trying the medium tune, I loaded and tried the more extreme tune and decided on the studs right then.
I now keep the extreme tune loaded all the time except when I lend the truck. It's now been ~4 months since the bullet proofing, and I am happy that I did it.
My bottom line advice -- if your truck is s DD or needed for work. Get a monitor and do the corrective bullet proofing, blue spring, EGR delete, new O-rings, turbo cleaning etc, up to the studs. Do the studs only if you have problems with the heads. Otherwise if it is a family/personal/occasional use truck used just for play then do everything at your leisure and as $$s are available. Add a coolant filter and consider a new oil cooler while in there.
The basic BPing should take ~2-3 days and cost ~$1,000-2,000 for an experienced shop. When you go beyond that it can take 1-2 weeks total costs in the ~$4,000 -5,000 range and that's if you have no head problems.
Take all FREE advice at its given price. Enjoy your 03 6.0. Mine is now 12 years old, and this old fart, 71 YO, still enjoys his truck fix.
