Default 6.0 Issues, Need some help

I have an 06 6.0. with an SCT tuner running an innovative diesel custom street tune. I recently noticed it has been burning through coolant. I have recently had to replace over a gallon. I have checked on several occasions for leaks underneath the vehicle and in the engine compartment and have found no visible leaks.

The truck also upon start up billows white smoke for a good 5-10 min until the truck has warmed up then it dies off at idle. Once I start driving the truck it will continue to blow heavy white smoke for another 5-10 min and eventually clear up again.

All regular maintenance is current. I have not noticed any loss of power really.

After searching and reading some of the other threads on here I’m going to guess it’s either a ruptured EGR cooler or blown EGR valve. But I still want to run it by you guys and try to get a definite answer before throwing parts in to it.

Also if it is the above problem is it something that needs to be fixed right now and have the truck parked until it gets fixed or is it able to be driven until I can get it fixed?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I went to check the oil to see if it had coolant in it and it has a slight discoloration but also smells like fuel. Any ideas ?

Is there a film or a dark ring around the inside of your degas bottle.
Do you have an EGR cooler delete in your truck.
How much extra oil did you have when you checked it.

I do not have an EGR delete, My degas bottle is so dark you can barely even see through it, and I believe the oil was right at the max line on the stick.

This what I would do if it was some truck . I would pressure test my coolant system.
If you search YouTube for (6.0L head gasket pressure test) the power stroke help one is the best .
You test your system to see if there is to much pressure that would be a head gasket problem or not enough pressure that would be your cooler .
If it your cooler I would suggest doing a delete then you will never have that problem again

Well I have had plans to stud the heads and do a delete anyways this just put that plan into a reality much quicker. So I guess that will fix the issue and set me up for any future power upgrades.

What about the fuel smell in oil? is that from one of those issues or something different.

If I'm going to have it in the shop torn down I want to do as much preventive maintenance and maintenance that I can afford at once.

I would check injectors and definitely reseal the injectors while you are in there. Just replace every o ring and look for issues while injectors are out. U may have a leaky injector and bad head gasket.

Well guys it's been determined by my local shop that I probably have a cracked head on the ole 6.0. We will find out for sure once they are able to get it in and torn down.

Sounds like you have blown head gaskets and a cracked head. Depending upon mileage, you might want to drop a remanufactured long block in it.
