Default banks sidewinder kit for 88 7.3l idi?

is the banks turbo kit for the 7.3l idi any good? what boost does it make out of the box, and can the boost be turned up?

Boost is only a reference of restriction of air flow in the intake manifold .. not indicitive of power being made ...

just an FYI...

its more about spoolability and air flow .. and just a heads up .. these things arent power monsters even with a turbo strapped to them ..
10-12 psi is good on a stock equiped truck ( assuming its a turbo engine to begin with ) .. much more that 12 psi and you can run into wrist pin issues, cracking heads, blow HG's , etc ... its all in how much you wanna spend ..

ya its an 88 7.3l factory non turbo. ive always owned 12v cummins so the 7.3 is new to me so not sure what these motors can handle. i do know there high compression pistons are great with high boost numbers. is there any company's that make good head gaskets for them? i am gonna order head studs soon. what is the wrist pin issue with this motor?

The banks kit I believe has no waste gate and probably does around 7psi out of the box. I'm not familiar with how to get more boost from a non gated system. Head studs are a good idea as the high compression coupled with boost is what tends to blow the head gaskets out. On the stock bolts, 12psi or less is the safest route to make the motor last. The factory turbo IDI's had stronger wrist pins and different pistons. Putting a turbo on a N/A motor is putting extra stress on parts that weren't intended to take it. However it's a rare occurrence and the majority of trucks run for hundreds of thousands of miles without an issue.

ya the banks turbo kit im looking at has a waste gate on it. the kits part number is #21060. is there a company that makes better pistons for it? the truck has 136,541 miles on it so it don't rebuilt yet so ill run the pistons that i got but 1 day i will rebuuld it and i wanna build a rock solid motor that will hold up. head bolts are **** every vehicle ever motor of my own i take apart always go back together with head studs.

Skip the fomalities and grab a P-pump 12V and drive the FK out of it !!!

If you rebuild it, just get a set of pistons for a factory turbo motor. In doing that though you will also have to replace your flywheel if you have a manual transmission. The turbo pistons are a different weight than the N/A pistons and have different flywheels to counter that. I learned that the hard way and had to pull my transmission twice in a week to replace the flywheel a second time.

If your gonna spent a bunch of money on the IDI ..

R&D IDI Performance

Get on the E-mail with them .. if your going to do something with one of these engines .. make sure your doing it right .. other wise the IDI .... is just best left stock internally ... Never gonna be a 500Hp monster .. ( Hence my Pun of the 12V install ) ..

i was gonna give R&D a call. im not really concerned with the hp numbers i just wanna make 500 ft. lbs or as close to that as i can without destroying the motor. i would love to a p pump 12v swap. that was my original plan with the truck when i got it.

I will be ordering some stuff from them. I'm planning on building a new motor for my truck. I plan on using the R&D cam and their head studs. Hopefully toss on a moose pump and misters as well as a turbo wheel upgrade.
