I think I'd find a way around the skim key before I tore into the motor that far. I would call one of the programmer guys (Smarty or H&S) to see if they can help you out, at the least I'm sure they could point you in the right direction.

You'll likely spend more money than what a smarty cost to do the swap you're talking about. You'll have several hundred in just gaskets to swap the head and front timing cover alone. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, just saying it might be a whole lot easier and cheaper to stick with what you have and is worth looking into further before you abandon ship on the common rail.

Embrace the computers and you'll find they are ten times easier to work on than a mechanical setup. Good luck

Keep us posted on how it turns out.. I was thinking of purchasing a theft recovery vehicle that's had the steering colum trashed. I dont know what all it would take to get it running, but it seems to me it would be a pretty straight forward fix.

tyrel_44's Sig:'97 dodge #100 fuel plate, afc and star wheel full forward, 80hp injectors, egt and boost guages, wastgate line pinched off, bramco flatbed, 3rd gen seats, 4'' exhaust soon to come

what i have learned so for is that if u have the obd 2 port and replace the colum u can take it to the dealer and thay can reprogram it to the new key and colum no prob. but in my case i am not using the factory key or colum and my colum is trashed to.
