Default High Idle Kicker

We all know wintertime is coming so here is a way to warm up your Cummins in under 10 minute to 170*F.

You need thee high idle flash before this will work either get it at your local dealer or barrow a Smarty and get it...
http://mopar.mopar1973man.com/tips/c...-18-019-01.htm

Quick video of it... Never mind the CEL light my bad during designing the kicker...

Here is the schematic of the high idle fooler for 1998.5 to 2002 model year Dodge Cummins Trucks.

Design Notes
During my setup I frequently check the status of the IAT and ECT using a ScanGauge II to verify the resistor and the value given by the resistor.
ECT Fooler resistor (3.3K Ohm) produces a signal at the ECT showing 123°F coolant temperature.
IAT Fooler High Idle resistor (39K Ohm) produces a signal at the IAT showing 28°F intake air temperature.
IAT Fooler 3 Cylinder High Idle resistor (56K ohm) produces a signal at the IAT showing 13°F intake air temperature.
Connectors can be purchased at Caspers Electronics

Operation

Cold Engine Start (Coolant <140°F - Outside Temp > 32*F)
Turn on the IAT fooler and select normal high idle. Now start your engine. With in about 2 minutes the high idle should start. Once the high idle starts turn off the IAT fooler and allow the ECM to monitor the IAT temperatures. As the engine warms up to 170°F it will cancel on its own and idle normally from that point on.

Cold Engine Start (Coolant <140°F - Outside Temp < 32*F)
Turn on the IAT fooler and select 3 cylinder high idle. Now start your engine. With in about 2 minutes the high idle should start once it get to 1,200 PRM's the 3 cylinder mode with begin. Once the high idle starts turn off the IAT fooler and allow the ECM to monitor the IAT temperatures. As the engine warms up to 170°F it will cancel on its own and idle normally from that point on.

Warm Engine Start (Coolant 140°F-170°F)
You can start the high software with a warm engine. At this point you need to use both the ECT fooler and IAT fooler. Select the proper high idle mode for your weather conditions as in cold start procedure. Once the high idle starts turn off the IAT & ECT foolers and allow the ECM to monitor both ECT & IAT temperatures. As the engine warms up to 170°F it will cancel on its own and idle normally from that point on.

Forced High Idle
Turn on both ECT fooler and IAT fooler have it set for normal high idle. Start the engine and allow the high idle to start. Once the high idle starts turn off the IAT fooler but leave the ECT fooler on. This will allow a forced high idle that never ends. To cancel it just turn off the ECT fooler and it will cancel.
WARNING: In this mode of operation the ECT sensor is completely disabled. There is no way of monitoring engine temperatures. Becareful and alert to changes in the engine at this point. If you have a exhaust brake DO NOT activate it in this mode.

Enhanced Warm Up
If you have a exhaust brake you can use it will both 3 cylinder high idle and normal high idle. But be sure to turn off the ECT fooler when the high idle begins this will allow for normal cancellation. This will push the EGT temps up to about 800-850°F and warm the engine rapidly in under 10 minutes you should have 170°F of coolant temperature.

Other Notes and Warnings...
  • DISCLAIMER: I'm NOT responsible for any damages to your vehicle from using this information.
  • WARNING: Do not activate any of the IAT or ECT foolers while driving the vehicle this will have a direct impact on performance and may case serve engine damages. Alway be sure that all foolers are turned off before moving the vehicle.
  • Once the high idle cycle has completed during this key cycle it is not possible to re-start high idle a second time on that key cycle. You must shut down the engine and restart to force a second high run. Now if you cancelled manually by tapping the throttle you can resume the high idle again by turning on the IAT and/or ECT foolers.
  • 3 Cylinder high idle is going to sound rather weird like the engine is falling apart this is totally normal. This mode of operation skips or shuts down 3 cylinders from getting a injection pulse. These 3 dead cylinders produce a load on the engine and cause it to warm up rapidly.
  • Even with both IAT and ECT foolers off the high idle software can start normally if the conditions require it as posted in the TSB by Dodge.

Ok still doing testing and such... I did find that if you turn on both the ECT and IAT on a fully warmed engine you can fool it to re-start high idle. It just takes about 2-3 minutes to start the program.

But beware that if you exhaust brake is on it can drive the exhaust temp quite high at times >850*F... (Like I've seen as high as 1000*F)

But so far it a real life saver and nice to be able to kick the switch and warm up the engine and have heat in the cab in about 4-5 minutes...

Like another job I was on helping a buddy with a Kubota tractor and the battery was low so we hooked up the cable and I popped the 2 switches and had all the power I needed for jump starting with high idle running...

I still think this is one of the best bomb's for the 24V trucks period. Great work michael.

So far it been wonderful... Every morning I can select high idle and set my exhaust brake. Then go back in the house and get my stuff together for the day. When I hear the idle drop I know I've got heat, my cab is warm and so is the engine.

Asl its been great for helping people with dead batteries. I select high idle and the alternator is putting out good strong voltage for even the weakest batteries without sitting in the truck now.

Then when I'm on accident scenes I can leave my warning lights running and know the high idle is keeping the batteries up and the EGTs from getting to cold!

(yes my lights were on but the sun glare killed the pic...)

Very nice write up.
My Pulse does the high idle for me too. I love it! All i gotta do is set the power level to 0 and high idle kicks in.

Question for ya... Can you select high idle or 3 cylinder high idle with the pulse? If not you could build the IAT fooler and get the ability of selecting either mode then...

Just another add-on for ya...

Got me on that one. I don't know. I had a Smarty at one time, so if it's cold enough it might. Might be a question for Quad.
Right now my warm up temp is set at 125*, so the truck high idles at Pl0 until that temp is reached. Then it goes to what ever power level i have it set at. But i can set the PL to 0 at anytime and high idle will kick in after one minute. You can set all those parameters to what ever you want.
