Currently In the middle of installing this motor into my fj40 (early toyota landcruiser).
would love to replace the housing completely...with a modern spin-on filter solution.
found a examples online, please see attached.

Check superturbodiesel.com - tuning performance turbo diesel mercedes, W123, W116 and up. OM617, OM60X and the Mercedes section of www.4btswaps.com Most people fab their own and use AN fittings, braided SS hose, and a regular remote filter adapter.

It is not a good idea to replace the factory oil filter with a "modern spin-on". The benz unit is not only a main and bypass filter but thermostatically controlls the flow through the cooler. This is way better than a single spin-on, if you need to move for clearance then just remote mount the facory unit. What trans are you planning on using in the FJ?

With the help from a few friends, I know have an adapter made from 5/8" aluminum...really happy with how it turned out
Used a gasket, as a template:
will be using 1/2NPT to AN8 fittings
final trimming:
test fit:
the biggest reason for my oil-housing relocation was due to a parking brake cable interference...no longer an issue
