Default DT466 Pulling truck Build

Ok, so I didnt know were to put this, I thought Sled Pulling Forum, but it would just get lost in the general babble.......

Anyways, I bought a 93 Dodge Ext Cab DRW to build into a puller. I got the 1st gen just due to the fact that you dont see too many out there.

Well, Ive had some downtime on it lately doing some other things and trying to find a good frame and drivetrain to start with. Anyways, this downtime has given me a ton of thinking time!!! So I got to thinking....to make my truck even more differnt...Im throwing around the idea of throwing a DT466 in the 1st gen and go pulling for fun!!!

As Ive been looking for info (and I have read just about everything I can find!!) there realy isnt that much out there to turn up the wick on a DT466!!!! Im going beyond the avrage free pump upgrades and such and there isnt much more than that.

Now this is strictly a puller for fun, just go out and run the Run What Ya Brung and open classes around the area, and if I get enough meat between my legs, take it to a big show and pull there (Yes I know, Mod Class and Ill get killed...whatever!) but I think it would be cool to see and build! I got a buddy with a decent 3.0 truck that does the same thing, so I guess we can go around together and put on a pretty good show!

My goals are not that lofty just due to the fact my wallett isnt that thick! So Im thinking about the 600-700HP range should make it run down the track pretty good! But how do I get there? Can I use 12v parts that might interchange? Im looking for a 94-97 DT466 so it will have a P pump that Im pretty familiar with, so i hope to turn that up myself.

I dont think I have the coin to go with Hypermax stuff just due to their prices!!! I mean &k for an overborekit??? Ain t gonna happen!!!

All in all, I think If can get 700hp at 4500RPM going down the track....thats a VERY good start!!!

Any help I can get from you guys would be AWESOME......and Better than everywere else Ive tried!!!

The DT466 in the years 94-97 are not P-Pumped. They have the same Kind of injectors as a 7.3L Powerstroke, they just flow a lot more. They have HEUI Injectors. Go with a older DT466 that is macanical. A DT466 In a firt gen Would be sweet I would like to do the same thing in a 78 to 79 Ford F-350. O and the DT466 are easy to turn up to 1000+ HP. And you can do it cheaper then a 700 HP 5.9L. Just keep us posted on the Build. And have FUN.

most people throw on a p7100 215 pump because they are proven pumps alot easier to adjust and are not as finicky trying to tune, there are 3-4 dt466 pullers here, they all run pretty good but the cummins still beat them in supermod class.

If you are set on the DT, try looking for info on pulling tractors. They used the same DT series for alot of years in tractors, just with varrying displacements. I know one local shop that is into the tractor pulling as well as the trucks has 525ci kits for the DT engines. If you want to talk to the guy let me know and I will PM his number, and website. But I still think an 8.3 Cummins would be sweet, I believe it is a member of the B series engine family, so it should be just like working on a 5.9, only bigger

8.3 is a 6CT...C-series family

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Keep in mind that there are at least 3 DT466 configurations, much like the B series Cummins; a rotary pump model, a P-pump model and the HEUI injection model. The tractor pullers love the P-pump model, and there is MUCH power to be had from them. I know a few guys that pull 1466 IH tractors with highly modified DT466 mills pushing well over 1000 horsepower. Definitely buddy up with some tractor pullers and look for hand-me-down injectors maybe... Then get some big 'ol turbos and a high pressure water injection system and see what you can pull off!

Future Bombs: AirDog 150, bigger DV's, 6" Bullhaulers, more chicken lights, fender flares, rear bumper, 4-link and air bags, paint and body, custom interior, sound system...

Im not dead set on a DT....just due the fact that I dont know how Im going to do it. I know i want to go with a P-pump style DT and I can get some decent power out of it.

But my biggest problem with going DT466 is that I have no idea on a trans/t-case set up. Im not too good with the Med and heavy truck trans. stuff so i dont know if I want to go that route. if I can find an adaptor to hook the DT up to an NV4500 Id be set!! But i dont even know if that possible.

I guess I could go with a Fuller or something in that range, but that leaves out a T-case........Its all just a crap shoot.....Then I got to think clutch!!!!!

Im building this just for a fun puller, so i dont care about what class i fit into...Heck the classes around here are just way to crazy now anyways and I dont have the pockets to even break into the top 10!!!

I think it will just be fun to go out, have something cool and differnt, and have fun!!

But if I can just get some big details solved...I think it can be done!

Maybe an SCS reverser box? I think that it actually functions as both the trans and the t-case, I think.

Source a 2-ton divorced t-case from a Deuce or something big, then you'll have big u-joints and everything and you can make equal length driveshafts...just have to have a BEEFY jackshaft between the trans and t-case. Divorced case will also allow for whatever tranny you can source. Most medium duty have higher load rating multi-disc clutchs anyway, so it shouldn't be hard to get some grabby metallic/ceramic button clutch discs to put in and reconfigure the springs for a good clamp on. Then you'll just have to cobble together a good master/slave cylinder assembly for the third pedal so you can release it. Fairly straightforward, and shouldn't break the bank...

Ok, talked with a guy that has a truck out there doing this right now....Got a TON of info!!!!

Anyways, he built the truck in 08 and used a allison auto for a few pulls then switched to a Spicer CM5552A....he says that trans isnt even close to the weak like...heck even runs a drop box and rockwells with it and it holds up fine/ Plus they are about 250-300 bucks cheaper than an NV4500 but can still use a DD or Triple disc clutch from South Bend!!! Looks like I got my tranny sorted out, now I just have to find one!

As far as a T-case goes, he ran a divorced NP205, but it kept breaking. Im gonna keep an eye out for something or try my luck with a DHD out of the donor truck for now.

As far as motor, about all he has it some good valve springs, a beefed up A Pump and an S480 turbo, and it HAULS!!!!!! Good thing is, he took about 150 pics when he was building the thing, so I can look off there and get over some humps that I havent thought of yet.

So I have settled that I WILL be doing a DT466 conversion on the puller, Now its time to look for parts!!!! Any one need a rust free 97 Ext cab body or a 93 Ext cab 2wd frame.....trade it for a DT motor!!!!

WOW ...I was just trying t gather info over the last month or so to see what all I needed to do almost the same build. I was thinking of using a medium duty frame and doing a cab swap though.

What did you decide on for a transfer case?

I would use a fabco but thats just me.

I will be building my truck just for fun and 1/4 mile times. I was wanting to eventually get around 1000+hp. I will be using a Spicer N175 rear end so if I want to have more power way down the road my drivetrain will support it.

I am curious how everyone's farmes are coping with these big diesels. I was going with the medium duty truck frame because if fear of destroying the the frame even with bracing added. PLus I believe a cab swap would be easier to do that a whole drivetrain but I dont know yet.

I will have to look at the spicer 5552 tranny some more. I was thinking I would be using a Eaton FS7206 or 8206 but I will very very slowly be doing my build.

Oh and does anyone know of any others with the 8.3 stuffed in a 3/4 or 1 ton chassis?

I only have started to be sld on the dt466 because they are so many others who have used this engine and there are many to chat with. I have found tons of parts and lots of help from pullers to manufacturers/ BUT when it comes to the 8.3 I haven't fpund many people at all to chat with. I think even the John Deere motors would be an option.

But I look forward to hearing more about the extended cab dually dt466 build.

*The 93-97 466 IS a P-pump in federal emissions(93-95 for CA). The optional 466E started in the late 95 model year.
*The 84-92 had an A-pump or MW-pump. The best being an 89-92, which have aftercooler, roller cam, and big intake opening.
*Then the old rotary pumped units prior to 84. Not much to speak of there.
