Default Turbo Suggestions

Im at the final stages of converting my F350 Crew Cab (93) with a 460 to a 12v Industrial Cummins (95) from a larger chassis Ford. Im using a 4R100 that has been built up to handle the 12v. Once the turbo is on, the truck will be inspected by a CA Referee, once/if it passes, I will then start swapping out injectors, removing the fuel plate on the P7100 along with the other list of improvements.

The truck runs great so now it's time for a turbo. I've done research but there are so many suggestions, HX35/40 Hybrid, S300G, Phatshaft62 and the list goes on. I would like to keep everything simple and reliable, I use the truck for desert camping by caring my lance camper and pulling my Land Cruiser. I'm leaning towards the HX35/40 Hybrid from HT Turbo. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

95 12v Cummins
Mechanical lift pump
P7100 Injector Pump
Ford Intercooler w/ 3" connectors
3" Exhaust with a used diesel muffler (later I will go to a 4" straight pipe)

Thank you
Nick

How big of an injector are you planning on running?

I ended up purchasing a Super B Single from Diesel Auto Power. Once the vehicle passes the CA Referee inspection, I was going to look into injectors and other upgrades. The Tech Rep at DAP suggested 5/11 or 5/12 injectors. I'm new to diesels so any suggested would be appreciated. I've been taking a crash course here and on line.

Im not all that familiar with the 5 holers, I am more familiar with the 7 holers. But after a quick google search with the turbo you bought I would look at the 5x0.012's. They are a roughly 90hp injector. That with your turbo should spool very well.

DAP is a good company to buy parts from. I have bought most of my stuff from them.

Thank you for the injector suggestion, I'll copy that down in my note book. Being that this is an industrial Cummins That came out of a larger chassis Ford, is it possible this engine has adequate injectors to produce the fuel needed? Or is basically the same engine that came out of a Dodge PU?

That I don't know. Look at the data plate on the driver side of the engine. And search to find out what size injectors are currently running.

Having lived in California All my life be aware that the diesel test involves the tester blipping the throttle and looking at the exhaust for any visible smoke. If they do that test on a 93 being converted I don't know. I suspect they will and then once it's certified and listed as a diesel you shouldn't get tested again unless they change the rules... again. When I lived there they required a test every two years just like cars but what they didn't have was an actual standard. So they were told to look for visible smoke when blipping the throttle, as though that actually indicated what it would do under load. CARB is just a bunch of maroons.

Thank you for the info, I'm aware of the excess smoke, thats why I was waiting to see if the referee passes the truck before i make any modification. I didn't know I would have to go back every two years, I was hoping to get off the grid. I'll now soon enough, my regestration is due at the end of May. i have a couple small items to clean up before I make an appointment. Do you know how strict they are with safety? i haven't been able to make a fan shroud. Again, thank you for the heads up.

The rule was, when I lived there, that no truck older than 1998 had to be tested. In your case you are because it's a swap. You may have to meet the standards of the engine year model instead of the truck year. I simply don't know.

I don't think California gives a hoot about safety, fan shrouds are not considered part of the smog equipment. If they did care about safety, they'd have safety inspections... They don't. All they really care about is making you tow the line on following their arcane rules. For instance, you can change the elbow that feeds into the "intake manifold" because it's considered an air horn and not part of the smog equipment. Why it isn't and the manifold is, I have no idea. You cannot install a water injection system even though it's proven to actually reduce emissions. Makes no sense.

So my suggestion is the dial back the fuel plate on the P-pump to minimum fueling and see if that doesn't work. Since your donor vehicle is only a 95, you should be good to go if you pass the first time. See if you can't also get tested on a windy day. That may or may not help but it's worth a try if you can't get it to not put out a puff of smoke when the throttle is blipped by defueling. Good Luck to you.
