Default Looking for fuel Miser ideas

First off I dont buy into cummins swap everything so I'd like to talk about other options.

My parts truck is an 82 C10 6.2 700R4 3.08 truck. Got 30ish mpg on the 4 tanks I ran through it before I parted out the body and interior due to a rotten frame and body.

At the moment I'm piecing together a 6.2 swap into an 89 C2500 8 lug. The truck has a knocking 350 and 4 speed granny gear.

My goals are a DD farm/parts getter that gets 20-22mpg down the road that can still pull a small trailer or load of feed. I figure an NA 6.2, 4 speed, and 3.42 gears will work until I get a 2wd NV4500.

Now the kicker is I always wanted a diesel El Camino that got 30+ mpg. The biggest reason for buying the C10 was to do a 6.2 700R4 into an El Camino but the C2500 came up for too cheap. Now I either need to find another 6.2/6.5 or consider other options.

Now that you have my long winded story what are your suggestions for a car that size and likely my 700R4.

So far as said 6.2 NA should nearly drop in if a 454 can fit and I'll be all GM.

Maybe a MB engine but I don't know alot about them. I see 240 and 300's for sale and some with a 4 speed manual.

Opinions guys? Ideas I haven't explored?

One of my co-workers has a mercedes sedan diesel in his Ram 150 campervan. It does the job. No reason it couldn't work in the El Camino... guys are putting them in Jeep Cherokees on here if you search.

However, the TH700R4 is quite ideal behind the 6.2L (low 1st, lockup OD). On my '84 Suburban I decided I had to have manual, so went with a SM465 and 3.21 gears instead. I suspect the 6.2L is almost a bolt-in for a smallblock in a RWD car.

What mpg differences would I see between the MB and 6.2? I've seen they get high teens to low 20's in an off road rig but not sure in a car with a good auto trans.

Price wise I think the 6.2 will be best, as said nearly drop in, no adapters, possibly no gear swap.

I thought about 3.21 or 3.08's in my C2500 but I still want to be able to haul a horse or 2 and I figure if I find a NV4500 then I will be right to cruise in 5th and tow in 4th.

No idea for mpg comparison. Since I started with diesels... almost anything mechanical gets decent economy so I don't worry too much about it.

TH700R4 has OD, lockup, and great aftermarket support. Don't know enough about the MB auto. I do know the manual trans Benz is most often a 4-banger NA diesel (same guy with campervan has one) as opposed to the 5cyl (turbo or non). The 6cyl is newer and I've only encountered in electronic form with turbo.

I did a quick search and didn't find much. Has anyone swapped a kabota into a 85 Toyota 4x4 4 speed? I figure it's pretty well all mechanical for both at that point and there is a 85 Yota parked on main street asking 1k obo due to "weak engine".

If you could point me to some yota reading material I'd appreciate that too.

Can't help with reading material other then Kubota swaps on this site. A 4 sp may not be the best option with no OD. But a 5 speed swaps right in. Also I just finished my toyota 22r adapter for the Kubota. I am looking for a 4runner / 5 speed now because the 22r and Kubota are so similar. Should be a very easy swap.

Any idea of a common Perkins that would fit a toyota? I was thinking a 4cyl 1104 but it says its 800# dry which seems heavy for only 100hp, I have one in my tree saw.

Looks like I need to look for a 404 which shows 66hp at 2800rpm and weighs 430# dry or find a Kubota.

Any suggestions on finding a 404 Perkins?
