So I've been trolling all the diesel sites and thought i'd post some of my build on here. This is my '71 Bronco and with a 4BT and 4R70W transmission. It took me about 4 months to complete and suprisingly it fits really well in the little Bronco

So this is my daily driver and it had a 347 stroker motor. It ran really well but the mileage sucked and the fuel injection never worked quite right so i got the great idea for a 4BT. Funny thing is, is that I remember going to the Knott's Berry Farm Ford show a few years ago and seeing a 4BT bronco and thinking "why would anyone do that". Anyways I got the itch and here we are. Even if I never got the 4BT in it forced me to think about the brakes and the lack of vacuum. I decided to put a hydroboost set up in before the engine and wow what a difference.

With the brakes worked out and tested I felt a little better that there woud be one less thing to worry about once I took the plunge. So out came the motor. I checked the angle it was set in so I could match up the new driveline with it. Of course I have no idea if this is consistent with what a cummins should be at or a 4R70W transmission but I figured if I just replaced the trans or just the motor this is the angle it would be at so I went with it.

With the engine out it looked like a lot of stuff I had to deal with but after a few days of looking everything over it got a little easier to visualize what needed to happen. But with all that said I ended up dropping the 4BT in and out many times to get it all figured out.

Thanks! I tried to do a good job but Im by no means a professional fabricator so im pretty happy how it turned out.

 

So heres the engine all cleaned up. I bought it from a guy back east and it came out of a bread truck. It had a ebuilders tag on it so i called them and gave them the number and they were able to give me all the specs and what they had done to it and when. It only had 3 years on it since the rebuild so that made me feel pretty good about it.

Figured while it was out I would change out the gaskets. I wish i had replaced the killer dowel pin but I didnt know enough at the time. Oh well hopefully it wont haunt me in the future

Before I got to the paint and all the gaskets I checked the compression to make sure the engine was ok. It had a rebuilders sticker from 2010 so I thought I might be OK but there was no way I was going through all this work before knowing what kind of shape the engine was in. A quick unbolting of the fuel lines at the injectors and removal of the injectors and i was ready to hook the compression tester up.

Sometimes a borrowed tool can be your best friend. This was my buddies and I think he got it at harbor frieght for a good price. Probably not a tool that a professional would want to use everyday but for a once and a while test it worked great
