Thought I would join the fun and start posting about the conversion I'm doing too. It should be fun to see DetroitDiesel's build and mine progress.

I picked up a V2203 DI from Rangmar about 6mo ago and have finally got the rig and parts to start putting it together. I have most of the parts already, included a K03 turbo and an NPR alternator with the built in vacuum pump.

I'm starting with a 2000 Ranger. Saw it on my way home from work one day... turned out to be a repo for a really good price. The truck was a 3.0l 4x4 5-speed running 3.73's.

Started machining the flywheel a last week and finished tonight. Ended up getting a new Centerforce Clutch and a new slave cylinder because the old one leaked. Turned it down to 11" diameter to fit in the bell housing and faced it down to make a good mounting surface.

Also got my adapter plate finished tonight. 1" 6061-T6 aluminum.

I will also be doing some upgrades to the truck along the way.
-Swapping the weak 7.5" rear for a 8.8" with limited slip.
-Swapping the trans out for one out of a 4.0l for the better spread on the ratios.
-Swapping to full manual 4x4 and getting rid of the electric transfer case and vacuum hubs

Should have more progress in the next few weeks after I pull the motor/trans currently in the truck.

Looking great did you use the 3.0 pattern or the 4.0 pattern?

I got the pics fine. I see 2 bolts in the flywheel in the lathe. Did you bolt the flywheel to a plug or a mandrel, to chuck it up? That would be another way to do it. Do you have a pic of that setup? I am still learning, and work set up seems to be where i have made more than one mistake.
Also your adapter looks very nice, did you measure it by hand? Was it manual cut or cnc?
Either way, nice looking

 

To get my flywheel in the lathe we just bolted it to a spare crankshaft

 

Thanks, its the 4.0 pattern and they have it on file now and I might make a template for the 3.0 when I pull it out in case anyone is interested.

I used a mandrel that I made. It should really be a lot shorter/closer to chuck, but I used a piece that was acquired for a different job so I didn't want to cut it down.

I got the same thing with the pics... photobucket used to be really easy to use for thumbnails, I just cant figure it out now since they changed it

 

Good to see more doing the swap! I would be interested in meeting up as well, I am just north of you. I was just looking at my records and so far I have 20,000 miles on my swap! Still driving it like I stole it!

 

flyinmonkeys, thanks for the reply and the invite. I have about another week of a house remodel project I'm helping my son's friend with, then I'll have flexibility with my time. When that time comes I'll PM you to set up a time to meet.

Maybe we can come up with a time when FTE can be there also. I'd really like to see a completed project. I just recently found this site and learned about the Kubota motor. I have my Dad's 1973 Datsun 620 pickup that I'd like to use as a diesel swap project, (looking for good fuel mileage) if I can come up with a reasonably priced motor/swap.

I was originally thinking of the Mercedes OM616 4 cylinder diesel. From what I've read about it, the OM616 is considered a bit anemic in the MB chassis, but the 73 Datsun is a good 1000 lbs lighter than the MB, so I was hoping it would be a good match. But, after doing some more research I came to the conclusion that the OM616 lower oil pan and the Datsun tie rod would try to occupy the same location.

Soooo---- more research time.
