Default 73 chevy/97 cummins. nv4500 to? transfer case options? np205? good?

Hey 'smart smokeblower' builders.
1997 Cummins engine.
Building 72 and 73 Chevrolets for the ranch for wife and I.
Need 4x4 transfer case options for nv4500 transmissions.
Not up on what is standard or available.
Np20??? Cases? Go with what is stock on salvage yard nv4500?
What adapts?
Need 'horse trailer pulling' strong.

A 29 spline NP205 (out of a manual first gen dodge) will bolt up to a NV4500, you will have to use the sleeve that goes over the splines (how first gens connect transmission to transfercase.) You then have two options after that, remove the transmission output seal and check/add fluid to the transmission as the fluid splashes back into the front cavity of the transfercase until it is filled up. Or you could have that sleeve turned down on a lathe to match the diameter of the output seal. IMO I think a first gen getrag would work fine for pulling your horse trailers, just overfill the transmission a quart or so as the factory fill point is too low and starves the front main bearing when towing up an incline. I took out the fill plug and installed a 90* pipe elbow which raises the level approximatly a quart.

Hey, good information, Red.
Want to use a good, burly and serviceable unit on these builds. We want to stay with the old and tough styles on the ranch. Ill give this more serious considerin.
>Thanks for effort<

There is an D2??-HD version with a pto cover on the front case. I have never seen the pto used but its a very strong unit and in my opinion is less susceptible to cracking and the front case half may be the updated case for the non HD models. The transfer case adaptor runs dry meaning the transmission has a rear seal and the transfer case has a front seal. This unit runs with the NV4500 I'm thinking 98 to 2007 or later I will check the exact model tomorrow for you.

Are you thinking of the NP241 DHD? That transfercase, and any offered on Dodges from 94 on will not work as they are driver side drops and his Chevys are passenger side drops (unless he has swapped front axles, that is).

+1 on the NP205.

There are also divorced np205's if you have the wheelbase for it.
