i have a 95 12 valve auto pretty much bone stock i have recently had troubles getting it into gear when i start it and try to put it into drive or reverse it doesnt seem to do anything i cant feel it go into gear and when i press the accelerator it does not go forward or back ward the only way i can get it into gear is by repeatedly shifting from park to drive then after a while i can feel it go into gear and then it drives and shifts fine.. any ideas?

 

Sounds like the torque converter is draining down when the truck sits for a while. Try putting it in neutral after you start the engine and after 30-60 seconds put it in gear. If it goes right into gear then and is fine you have a worn torque converter drain back valve in the transmission's valve body.

 

Im having the same issue with my truck, rebuilt tranny and new torque converter. The valve body was never touched yet though, but this just started recently on mine. I have checked the fluid when warm and it appears to be full although I have had a slight leak out of my pan gasket. Could it be possible im getting bed readings from the dipstick and its low. Its been dripping for a few months now. I dont wanna fry my transmission cause i just got the whole thing rebuilt so any help is greatly appreciated.

 

I have to assume you are checking the transmission fluid level when the shifter is in neutral and not in park. If the shifter is in park the reading will be higher as the torque converter is not being filled when in park as it is when in neutral. You will not fry the transmission if it does not go into gear right away, but you can get some clutch slippage when it finally goes into gear that would lessen the longivity of the clutches if you are giving it extra throttle trying to get it to go into gear.

 

I'm assuming you've changed the filter

 

Yes I was checking it in nuetral and yes its a fairly new filter.

Wierd, checked my fluid again when its cold instead of warm and it was a quart low, letting it sit overnight and going to try it in the morning hopefully I fixed the problem. I hate the dipsticks on this thing yesterday it was reading full and now its was low. oh well ill let you guys know it that fixed it.

 

Cold fluid will read different than hot because it expands as it heats up. some dipsticks have a cold and hot full marks.

 

Dodge doesnt on these year trucks and tansmissions apparently, but between hot and cold I dont see much of a difference on the dipstick either way anyway. So after putting in the quart, all seems good atleast this morning it did. Didnt slip when cold and went right into gear. Hopefully that was it but for now its fixed

I think you were just low on fluid, check while hot with the truck running in neutral.
