Default My truck is acting up again!! Plz help need ideas soon!

Year: 2001

Miles: 267,238 miles

Model: Single cab, 2500 flatbed

Motor: 5.9 HO Cummins-6 speed

Mods- Just a bigger straight pipe, everything else that I know of is stock.

Recently Done/Changed: I just did a new lift pump {stock cummins part about 50 miles ago}, new fuel filter housing because the original one cracked, new filter along with the housing {500 miles ago}

Primary Use: Drive it to school, work, and home... Hasnt pulled many trailers, Dirt bike in the back a few times a week but thats it.

Issue: My truck acts like it is running out of fuel and sputters down, sometimes stalling at stop lights. When it does stall it takes about 3-5 minutes of cranking over and turning key to cycle it. It has started back up after a while all 3 times its stalled on me. It felt like a fuel problem so I put a new lift pump in it because I had one on warranty so it was easiest and cheapest thing I could think to do. It has only sputtered down after its at operating temperature. Never when first starting up and going, it has started up normal too. The other day when it last did it it blew tons of white smoke while starting to accelerate. It stalled and I got it started up and got it home then I went to drive it later that night and it wouldnt start... It was cold outside but the engine was already warm when the white smoke came out. Now im currently trying to start it but this morning I cranked it over too long so the battery is weak, so im letting it charge up... What worries me is that I couldnt start it after I saw all that white smoke at the light before it stalled. Any Ideas??? I need to get this fixed as it is my only way around to work and practice and stuff, its holding me up bad! plzz help. Also my coolant reservoir is bone dry, which is a head gasket problem correct? BUT it feels so similar to a fuel delivery problem... And I know that I have needed to add coolant for a while now, just never got around to it {kept forgetting } I cant recall if there was any coolant in the reservoir before the problem started which sucks but the truck has never showed any signs of overheating or abnormal temperatures. It had a dead pedal feel for a little while before this but I put a lift pump in it which stopped the dead pedal feeling {about 3 or so months ago} This new problem just started up a couple weeks ago which is when I did the new lift pump. Another mistake of mine is not having a fuel pressure gauge so Im not sure what to tell you on the pressure but it was enough to make diesel shoot out the top of the filter housing when I did the recent lift pump.

Also, the truck has been showing a P 1693 code for a while {which is a companion code} but its been doing that long before it has acted up like this... so im not sure if its related. I found the code by turning the key 3 times, not a reader. Thank you everyone.

When you did all of the replacement of the Lift pump and filter housing did you put any plumber tape on, it sounds like your sucking air. If it ever stalls out on you again Id crack and injector and see if its running clean diesel. Also if it dies on you at a light bump the starter but dont start the truck and the lift pump will purge the system.(Not comlpetly but enough to bring fuel to the injectors.) I had a tractor doing this it would run ok but when I stopped it would stall and a ton of white smoke. It turned out I had a crack in my fuel seaporator. Id start there bud. Whit smoke genneraly means two things bad injectors or a coolant leak. Also if its cold it does it to. Id smell you exhaust you can smell the anifreeze if it burning up in the cylinders. But I tighten all your fuel line connection check all your lines for signs of a leak, and if your truck dirty wash it so you can Identify leaks. Also put some coolant in

Thank you man!! I did not use plumbers tape, but it sucking air is definitely a good explanation for what it is doing.... Seems spot on! Ill check the lines and everything. Thanks!!! And im pretty far north of you, I live in New River probably 30 or so miles north of Phoenix.

If that is the problem wouldnt it have started happening a long time ago when I replaced the filter housing or the 1st lift pump I did? It just seems weird that it would suddenly start sucking air.

Sometime you get lucky and they stay tight or they evntully work loose. Depends what you do. But its worth checking. Start simple and work to the more complicated stuff. If you still have that issue PM me be glad to help you out. Also you use to be farther north of my I live 600 or so miles north of meas in colorado now, huntin better.

The P 1693 Code is a compamion code indication there is another code being thrown either from the PCU or so I get an OBDII on her a good one will tell you what goin on. Autozone can help with the OBDII

Alright. I'm convinced its a head gasket. ... Little water-like bubbles in the oil, it had weird idling and now is basically seized up an won't turn over. ... That would explain the "running out of fuel" feeling, it was pretty much a surge. When idleing the rmps would drop a little then returm to normal then repeat constantly.

Sorry for the delayed responce I would do a compression test to see if you have sufficient compression also gives you a chance to see if you cylindeers are water locked. When you take your head off make sure its not warped use a straight edge and a feeler guage
