Default 2.3L Mitsubishi powered Ranger No Start

The problem is below, but I'm a little new so forgive me if this isn't the right section!

The truck is an 86 ranger with a 2.3 liter Mitsubishi turbodiesel, 5 speed, 2wd. I stopped driving it almost exactly a year ago because of a leaky fuel injector pump. We took the pump off and kind of determined that it wasn't worth fixing/rebuilding/replacing (From what I've read it's pricey to say the least) and put it back on. This is where things really go wrong. The truck now will not start. It comes very close, blows smoke, maybe turns over once, and then nothing. The glow plugs worked before the pump was taken off, but could this be the issue?

It could be. . My best guess would be that either the leaking injector pump has air or the timing is not quite right after you pulled the pump and reinstalled it. Take a test light or volt meter to check for voltage to the glow plugs to see if they are getting power One trick I have used when glow plugs aren't working is to take the intake hose loose at the engine and point a lit propane torch in the intake while cranking it. The heat from the lit torch heats the air enough that it will start without the glow plugs working and eliminates the possibility of damage from using ether.

I think it has the KIKI or DENSO pump on it which is a copy of the bosch ve pump. If you are paitient and careful you can reseal the pump yourself and the kit is less than $50 I just rebuilt the pump on our Dodge Cummins which is a 6 cylinder version of the same pump and am about to rebuild the pump on my ranger with the 2.2 mazda engine. It is not a hard pump to reseal.

Thanks, that's more of a lead on the injector pump than I've had in a lot of hours in front of Google. Would a bosch Pump (ie, junkyard find) swap in and work at all or is there too much of a difference?

The internal operations are about the same but you would have to find a pump of the 2.3 to fit. If you want to try yourself there are injector shops that will sell parts and the kit for our Cummins was around $20. When I took the adjustment screws out of the dodge I just put a small drop of superglue on the locknut to keep the adjustment in the right place and it requires taking a 12mm 12 point socket and grinding part of the flats out to make the special 3 point socket to get some of the special bolts out and in. Take a dremmel tool and grind 2 flats out and skip 2 then repeat until you have a 3 point socket. One of the sponsors on the site might be able to supply the kit.
