Default Dies in Drive and Reverse-96' 12 valve

I've got a problem with the old dodge. When I came home on military leave I went home and tried to start it up and drive it and I'm not really sure what happened when I was gone. My buddies drove it a little but still I just want to find the cause of this problem. When you start the truck which smokes like crazy and ran fine even with all the extra fuel before, it takes a minute to warm up to where it will stay running without a little foot on the pedal. Once you get oil pressure up it should stay running in park or neutral. Idle is set at 900rpm. to keep the truck running you have to rev it to about 1100 RPM to keep it from dieing in D or R. if you let off the throttle it dies instantly. I have a new transmission built as I thought the torque converter could be part of the problem locking up or something but it isn't. New solenoids and all new billet internals. I know it's hard on it to put it in gear at such a high RPM esp. on all new parts, but that's the only way to keep it in gear. Since the rebuild it's only bee driven maybe 50 feet so no damage has been done. Had the pan off today and put a new solenoid in for the torque converter with new fluid and the same problem. unhooked electronics from the trans to rule out any electrical malfunctions and no change. had a transmission professional look at everything and he said the trans is fine. I did a pressure test on my coolant system today as well and I pumped the gauge to cap pressure of 16 lbs and it went down to 9 pounds in less than 10 mins with no leaks making me think a possible head gasket bad. Could the root of the problem be with the engine? Runs good in park or neutral but dies in gear. HELP pleaseee!
