Default Speed Sensor on 99 Dodge 2500 Cummins

Hi i really need some help. My 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 24V Cummins wont shift past second gear. I got a new speed sensor for it. I go to take the old one out and a ton of tranny fluid come out at me. I thought this was not supposed to happen? Do I just let it pour out, change it then check the level? Also the tranny fluid smells terribly burnt def need to change the fluid any way. Just hopefully dont need to change the whole tranny. Any help heres muchly appreciated. Thanks so so much

Does your truck have a separate trans cooler or does it use the radiator to help cool transmission fluid?
