I have a 1989 6.9IDI I just purchased, that has not ran or been driven in 5 years due to a bad starter. What should I do after replacing the starter?

 

first ....change oil..and all fluid's like trans diffs ect..check all wiring for rodent chewing so there wont be any shorts or grounding out..thats a start ....scott

 

i would recommend turning it over full revolution with a pry bar first....just to make sure there isnt a stuck valve hangin open.

i would start there before even replacing the starter...thing could be siezed. good luck and let is know how you make out. starters are expensive for these things i have a almost new gear reduction starter for a 7.3 i would sell you for $60 shipped

I've never had to turn over an engine with a pry bar, how would I go about doing that? And what are the chances the engine is seized?

It's an automatic transmission, but if I put it into first gear could I use my other 1990 F250 with a 351w to tow it and turn the engine? Or would that not work?

 

breaker bar on the alternator pulley should do that trick, I would also pull the fuel filter, fill her up with some fresh diesel, and toss atf (automatic transmission fluid) or some type of diesel fuel lubricant into the tank as its been old and sitting but should do it regardless. Without a doubt, you're going to have to purge the air out of the fuel lines, so turn over the engine via a piece of wire on the starter relay while pressing in the shrewder valve on the filter housing, once there is fuel coming out, grab a 5/8 wrench and crack open the 6 fuel injector line fittings on the injectors themselves, 3 on the drivers side then 3 on the passenger, turn over truck until there is some fuel coming out, then close up three of the injectors, crank over the truck until it starts, being sure to give your starter a rest. If that doesn't work, use some WD40 in your intake to get it started. DO NOT USE STARTING FLUID!!!!! wd40 is shown to be safe on glowplugs, just use a small amount. you should be up and running after that

forgot to mention, you will probably run into a stuck metering valve in the injection pump, which can be id'ed as the truck stalls once you let off the accelerator quickly. It can be fixed by filling your fuel filter with seafoam, then running the truck for about two minutes, followed by letting it sit over night

 

Thanks, what do you think the odds of it needing a rebuild are? And although it's been in Michigan for 10 years, it used to be an Arizona truck, so the body is clean. I have been thinking about swapping the 351W in my 1990 F250 and putting in the 6.9 and the body from this truck since it's been sitting for 5 years.

 

If you're losing coolant and your oil is overfilled due to it then I would suggest a rebuild if not I would leave it alone
