Default Cummins 5.9 liter 6BTA Marine problems

My friend has a pair of Cummins 5.9 liter 6BTA six cylinder diesels on his boat. One of them is making no power and his mechanic is stumped!

They have just replaced the turbo with a rebuilt unit and put a new intercooler on it and this has not resolved the problem. He is only making about 5 PSI boost and believes he should be making 20-30 PSI. He has no real power out of this motor like its mate, even though otherwise the motor runs fine.

I am no diesel mechanic but assumed that it would be the waste gate, but he says that his model does not have one.

We spent all of the Rockdale Regatta in port and he has already spent thousands and still not resolved this problem. Any ideas?

Not going to harp on you too much about it but Cummins doesn't havt a G in it.

Okay, now I agree with TMan check fuel pressure. You need fuel to create boost.

Check fuel pressure and all boost tube/hose connections.
When was the fuel filter for that engine last done?
What fuel system is on this engine?
Any performance modifications?
Does it smoke?

Thanks Mike! My friend is Travis and I have passed on your number! I am back in Atlanta and he and the boat are still in Charleston.

OK, regarding the fuel pressure, at this point the tested pressure is an unknown. However the diaphragm, injectors and filters are new, so I guess that he assumed that he had that base covered.

His intake boost pressure is 0 PSI under load and 30 PSI under no-load. The engine will runs up to 1900 RPM and will do no more under load. His oil pressure, volts, and temperature are good and his exhaust system is unrestricted. For what it is worth he also have fresh coolant, and a new water pump and impeller.

He is getting ready to test the fuel pressure today! Thanks for the help so far!

Let's see, more info for the collective mind.

There are no mods to the motor and the fuel injection is the standard unit for this application. I do not know otherwise how to describe it.

All the hoses and seals are tight under load.

The fuel lines are all high pressure steel and are not kinked. We are testing the pick-up tube screen in the tank at this time for trapped sediment.

The injectors have been pulled and they are all clean and dry on the tips.

The motor have two fuel pumps for two motors. The motors have new air filters. The throttle has been checked, the Throttle body plate shaft is not bent and the throttle cable pulls it open all the way.

That is about it for now, still checking fuel pressure and getting ready to blow out the pick-up line in the tank with compressed air. I will keep you advised, and thanks! : )

BTW, the motor does not smoke.

Well guys, fuel pressure is good and the fuel lines have been blown out and the Racors cleaned. The bottom line is the same, no power on that engine. The mechanic, my buddy, and I are all stymied.

Any other ideas?
