It might be a little heavy but they put 'em in Jeeps and Bronco's so you should be OK.
You might consider something from a forklift.

Power wise, it's turbocharged so it's actually just as quick as the 4 cyl gaspots. It'll take 3500-4000rpm regularly but I try to keep it below 3000, just to make sure nothing bad happens.

On hills or with a load on it maintains speed better than the equivalent gaspot engine...84hp@4000rpm, 129lbft/tq @ 2000rpm. It's not a race car, but doesn't do bad at all.

If you're converting a newer truck you'd be better off with a 4D56 or newer, out of a Mitsubishi Pajero (Montero) that can be found all over every country in the world except the U.S. I get my maintenance parts through an industrial/oil/hydraulic shop in Tacoma. Stuff is easy to find for these little engines.

You can get a complete 4D56 or newer variant with trans & t-case for about $4,000 if you look around the internet. Most of them come out of Canada, some Australia. If you go to Canada you can buy parts for these engines just about anywhere.

Hope this helps,

Dan -
