not much, $60 ebay kit. You get special bulbs and ballasts. You basically plug the stock circuit into the ballast and put the bulb in the housing and connect the two. One downside to remember is HIDs take about 10 seconds to warm up fully, so they aren't good if your flipping your highs on and off all the time. The improvement is argued constantly, but I like em.
When you order you can specify the color temperature. I put the coldest temp in my dad's fogs (did the 880 or w/e conversion on the LMM) and they are definately bluish and definately bright. But they are basically pontiac low beam bulbs in the fog housings.

he could disable the headlights from starting up when its dark, i got mine set up like that
