Default HELP!! Starters burning up on 06 gmc duramax

My dad has an 06 gmc duramax 606.
The starter went out so my husband put another one in that was refurbished. The old starter looked like it was burnt up? Can something be causing the starter to burn up?? If so, what could it be?? I NEED HELP ASAP bc my dad is wanting to buy a new one now!!
Thanks,
Donna. 😊

How old is starter that was removed?
Starter brushes will wear over time and loose contact with the commutator which causes increased resistance which = heat and eventually burn up the brushes or the starter winding's in the stater or armature. Normally you should get upward of 100,000+ miles out of a starter.
Hope this helps.
I try to buy the best starters and alternators I can afford, rebuilds are ok but I prefer to get new or a good name brand.

Default Not sure

Not sure how old the starter was bc he bought the truck used. My brother ordered the refurbished starter. He bought a new one so I hope this works bc he doesn't have the money to put it in the shop!! Could there be another reason it's burning the starters up? The fuse is good, so could there be another reason? Falty wiring?

Did your father buy a new starter just because he didn't trust a rebuild? I guess I am confused a little, how many starters has the truck burned up?
The engine grounding cables or jumpers to the frame would be a good place to look. Also both battery cable connections.
But unless its burning up starters on a regular basis I would say it may have just been time for the old one to be replaced.

Default Original starter burned up and refurbished one.

The original starter on the truck burnt up so he bought a refurbished on from car quest. Now it seems to have burnt up within a week bc his truck won't start again. So he just bought a brand new one and this will make the 3rd starter that will be put on his truck. I'll check what you have suggested. Thank you!!

Things to check,
Bad connection at a battery cable, either at the battery positive or negative posts.
Weak battery/s.
Damaged battery cable ie; broken wires, chafed, cut, corrosion at connections.
Try hooking up some jumper cables and jump start it.
Take the batteries to the parts store and have them checked.

Default Tried jumping it off.

All battery cables and connections are like new. We tried jumping it off but all it would do was make a clicking sound where the starter is located. Dad is having it toed to the shop to put on the machine. Hopefully they will find the problem that way. Thank you for all of your help. I'll post if he finds out what's wrong. Maybe it can help someone else who may have the same problem.

Thanks again!!
