sound like a leak on the suction side of the fuel lines.
try priming it till hard first and see if it starts quicker
if yes, check around the filter/housing. check the bleeder screw (common fault), cracked or damaged water-in-fuel sensor or even the housing.
also make sure none of the rubber hoses are cracked, etc. you can also replace the short hose on the output of the filter with a clear one to see if any air bubbles in the fuel.
