Default new guy with first diesel

Hey everyone I just bought an 02 with 168k miles and all 8 injectors replaced last week. I just bought an edge evo programmer today and like it so far. Taking the muffler off tomorrow. Anyone have any advice or opinions? This is my first diesel so I would like any suggestions. Any idea what tune or mods I would get the best mileage with? Tires are stock for now. Most ill do is a leveling kit with 33s. Occasionally ill tow a flatbed with my ****** pickup or hay or firewood. Thank you all for any advice!

welcome to dieselbombers
As for your truck diesels love to breath, so if you can get air in easier, the motor will like that.Since your straight piping the motor that will help to. As for the tuner, does it have the gauge part on it so you can keep an eye on your temps? If not i would recomend an egt gauge and a tranny temp gauge if yours is the auto tranny. Because when you put a tuner on it will increase your egt's.With the air intake and exhaust done that could help increase your fuel milage some.

Ok thank you. I have a factory trans temp gauge on the dash. Are those pretty accurate? Ill look at getting a pyro and boost gauge. What would a pretty good brand of intake be? Would it make a difference if I t9k the catalytic converter on? I just don't want the truck too obnoxiously loud.

I'd say get an aftermarket air intake. I use airaid, personally. And I too am new to diesels, and i have been told time and time again, Glow shifts are ****. I was recommended Isspro. Their kind of pricy, but i would rather spend the extra money and have accurate readings. And congrats on the Duramax, other than the injectors (which you've already taken care of) the first generation Duramax's are awesome motors.

Unless its a california truck it shouldn't have a cat on it so there should only be a muffler. I have an edge juice with attitude it's on tow settin I cut my muffler off an had a shop bend up some 3inch pipe to replace it. I just put a k&n filter on my intake. With 285/75 r16 I can get up to 18 mpg. As for advice make sure to keep up with your fuel filter changes helps injector life.

I like what I'm reading so far to what these boys are sayin. Also if your putting bigger tires and what not on it and maybe bigger rims. Make sure that you do the proper front end work to it, or else you'll get the broken front end parts. I didn't know bout all that until I read Diesel Power mag on the section where they were talking bout lifting these trucks since they don't have straight axles in the front and are independent. I'm not sure whats all involved in that since I haven't done anything like that to my rig. Also if you haven't seen that the gauge pod's will go out from time to time. (mine just went out a couple months ago) But that isn't no worry you can get them rebuilt..for less than a knew one..mine cost $120 because the guy pulled it, but $100 was all he charged if you pulled it. Took him maybe 15 minutes to rebuild it and has life time warrenty on it. Other than that I've had nothing but good luck out of my dirty. Also, for intakes I'd look at S&B I've heard some good things bout them. And for tuns just try and not push them or else you'll go into limp mod. I don't have a tuner but know people who do. Most guys have them for towing and set them on different settings just to play with fuel millage to see witch one is best and best suits you.

hello, im new to the whole diesel world, i have driven lots of diesel trucks as im an apprentice mechanic at a shop. we dont get a whole lot of diesels in, but the majority are just for servicing and brakes nothin more.

my question is, im lookin at a 2003 silverado 2500HD 6.6 LB7 ext cab with 218,000kms has a 2" leveling kit, and new 33" tires. and i have talked the guy down to 11000$ as is. (as i can do most mechanical work myself, and get safties) he said "injectors were done by the dealer" he didnt tell me a milage.

i would like to go look at the truck but I would like to know what i should look for before buying. i know of the hazing and grey/white smoke, but should there be blow by when opening the oil fil while running? etc?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
kris

Kris, if you Carfax it, it'll show up if it was done by a dealer, and make sure all 8 were replaced. Generally if ones bad, they all are, or are about to be. And if you let it get cold and fire up, and feel the cylinders, they should all heat up evenly. If they don't, the one that isn't or ones, are bad and not firing. The only problem with the first gen is that the injectors were internal, which made them difficult to work on, the 04.5 are external. But thats a fair price, not great, but fair. 218k isn't a lot for them. But whats its condition? Interior, and exterior. When you get far enough back, you find a lot of rust, and people who live down gravel roads have their rocker panels wither away to nothing.

thanks for the reply cole,

this may sound stupid, but how do you carfax the vin? take it to a GM dealer?? or?

and from the pictures, minimal rust, no tears in seats, has power seats, 7" pop-out dvd/cd player in dash, aftermarket american racing rims, air induction hood, new wheel bearing and ball joints he says.

and he says the only issue is that the cluster(odo) isnt working, he bought a new truck 3 months ago, and stopped driving this truck constantly about 3 months ago, so he said 218,000kms is very accurate. so im assuming a cluster is about 400$ to get a refurbished one.

its somethin that i thought i could start into the diesel world at a good price, and not break the bank. i want to take 10,000$ cash and wave it infront of his face and see if hed take it.
