Default Starting question

Switching brands here.
99 GM diesel, 155K on the engine and truck. Brand new batteries, engine block heater.
I drove the truck 5 miles. A 15 minute hair cut.
Tried to start the truck. It turned and turned with no ignition. After the 3rd attempt and numerous rotations it finally started.
This is the 1st time EVER (I'm the original owner) this has done this.
Anyone want to take a stab?
Thanks,
Ed

Check for air in the fuel.

A rotted or rusted line could be allowing it to suck air in, resulting in a no start.

you can bleed a little off from the fuel drain "T" or lightly crack the air bleed on top of the Filter manager housing.

Air from either calls for a thorough inspection from the FM back to the tank.

have you changed the fuel filter recently?

Sometimes the gasket doesn't seal properly on installation and allows air to get sucked past.

High mileage pumps also tend to bypass too much fuel internally when worn. 155,000 is getting up there but not outrageous. There used to be a trick of pouring cold water over a hot pump that wouldn't start. If the truck started right up after a shut down and subsequent no start, it indicated your pump was worn. Supposedly, the cold water contracted teh housing but the internals were still hot and it tightened up the clearances. Never tried that one myself though, sounds a bit too sketchy with all the hot and cold jazz....

Of course, there's always the infamous PMD issues that follow these vehicles around like a black cloud....

Thank you eBarress and Great White. I appreciate the suggestions and thoughts.

I should have elaborated just a little bit more. The starter is brand new.

I did recently replace the fuel filter in the engine area within the past 2 months. I too was suspecting the possibility of air getting into the fuel line and will look into this further.

I hope it's not the PMD as this will be my 3rd replacement since I bought the truck in 99.

1. jump the fuel pump relay, and pop the cap on your fuel filter, you should be getting fuel out. if not, you either have a bad fuel pump, leak in the lines, or the sock in the sender could be bad,
if you are getting fuel to the filter with no problems, go to 2.

2. make sure the gaskets are good in the fuel filter. it is tough to tell if its leaking considering that the fuel is sucked in not pushed out. if this is good, go to 3.

3. check for fuel around the Valley of the engine and the fuel lines at the bottom of the filter housing, and the filter housing is good, these trucks have a common problem with the housing cracking. if this is good go to 4.

4. crank any of the injector lines free, and crank the truck, tell me what you get
if you get no fuel, you could have a bad PMD, (heath diesel)
if you have a good PMD laying around change it out and see if it starts

check your grounds as well,

hope this helps, i will post the "no start guide" here as well

forgot to ask, where is your PMD located?
